Obituaries

Mr. William Carroll Davidson, 81, of Milano, died Wednesday, April 5, 2017, in a Temple hospital.

Funeral services for Mr. Davidson will be held Saturday, April 8, at 11 a.m. at the Kathryn W. Green Chapel of Green-Patterson Funeral Home in Cameron, with Rev. Fred Hornaday officiating.  Burial will follow at the Liberty Cemetery.

Mr. Davidson was born June 10, 1935, in Cameron, to William Jennings and Bertha (Hughes) Davidson. He graduated from Milano High School in 1954, where he was an avid athletic booster until his death. He married JoAnn Miller. She survives. He served on the Milano ISD school board for 25 years. Mr. Davidson retired from Alcoa after 32 years of service with them.  He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Caldwell, where he served as a deacon and was the song leader.  Mr. Davidson will fondly be remembered as the rock of his family for his children and his grandchildren. He was also a master “42” player.

Nettie Dee Harper, 92, of Thorndale, passed away Saturday, April 1, 2017, in Georgetown.  Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 5, 2017, at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale, with burial following at the Taylor City Cemetery in Taylor. Visitation was held April 4, 2017, at the funeral home.

Nettie Dee was born Nov. 13, 1924, in Thorndale to Thomas Walter Sr. and Norine (Cowan) Beard. She worked as a teacher’s aide and librarian in Thorndale until the age of 19 when she moved to Murfreesboro, Tenn., where she worked in the First United Methodist Church nursery. She moved back to Thorndale in 1975. Nettie Dee was a member of the Pleasant Retreat United Methodist Church in Thorndale and was involved in various activities and groups at the church. She taught Sunday School at the church and also serviced as the church librarian.

Betty J. Bucanek, 80, of Granger passed away Tuesday, April 4, 2017.

 Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, April 6, at Providence Funeral Home.

 Celebration of Life Service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, April 7, at Providence Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Granger City Cemetery.

Betty was born in Thorndale on Oct. 21, 1936, to Adolph and Lillian (Hirt) Felfe.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Susan Joy Menzel; two brothers, Earl and Wilbert Felfe; and sister, Bernice Zieschang.

Betty is survived by her husband, Frank Bucanek; son, Glenn Menzel and wife Joyce; daughter, Jackie Deaton and husband Danny; granddaughters, Courtney Adkison and husband Scott and Susan Menzel; and great-grandchildren, Keltzie Harrison, Lexie Adkison, and Nathaniel Menzel; sister, Merlene Felfe.

Mary Pearl Angell, 76, of Temple and formerly of Cameron, died Tuesday, April 4, 2017, in Temple. 

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 8, at the Walkers Creek Cemetery Pavilion with Rev. Tim Cheatham officiating. Burial will follow in the Walkers Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron.

Mrs. Angell was born April 24, 1940, in Milam County to Ernest and Beulah Magnolia Reed. She married Richard E. “Gene” Angell in Texarkana, Ark., on July 16, 1957, and he preceded her in death. She and Gene farmed for many years. Later, she had worked at several restaurants in Cameron. Mrs. Angell was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cameron. 

She was also preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. 

Eva Maria Alvarado, 52, of Cameron died Sunday, April 2, 2017, at her home.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Monica’s Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the St. Monica’s Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron with a rosary beginning at 7.

Mrs. Alvarado was born April 15, 1964, in Cameron to Frank Borgas Sr. and Eva Valdez Borgas. She married Raymond Alvarado. She was preceded in death by a brother Ricky Borgas and was a member of St. Monica’s Catholic Church. 

Vernell Dvorak, age 84, of Thrall passed away Saturday, April 1, 2017, at Temple Hospital after a short illness.

Vernell or more affectionately known to us as “Granny” was raised in the Hutto/Round Rock area and attended school in Hutto and graduated from Round Rock High School in 1950.  She met the love of her life, James Dvorak, on a blind date. They were married on Feb. 18, 1951, and were blessed with 58 years of happily married life together living and raising a family in Thrall.   

Virginia Louise Smith Schuhsler went home to glory to be with her Lord Jesus Christ at 8:43 p.m. April 1, 2017. She was looking forward to her entrance into heaven and to beholding the face of her Lord, Jesus Christ.  Graveside funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Oak Hill Pavilion.

Virginia Louise was born to Charles Cecil Smith, Sr. and Annie Foreman Smith March 8, 1921. She was the youngest of three children.

She was preceded in death by her beloved brothers, Charles Cecil Smith Jr. and Joe Simmie Smith.

She has one son, Charles Schuhsler. Virginia is also survived by three nieces, Shirley Smith Harrison of Bartlett, Tenn., Sandra Smith Grindle of Plano, and Dorcas Smith Owens of Rockdale; and a number of great-nieces and great-nephews. 

Charles Taylor, 53, of Pampa and formerly of Cameron, died March 29, 2017, in Pampa. 

Memorial services will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron.

Charles was born June 15, 1963, in Cameron where he was a 1981 graduate of Cameron High School. He worked in customer service in the grocery business and had worked for a while at KRXT Radio in Rockdale. His true love was being a disc jockey, spinning records for 30 years. This afforded him the opportunity to rub elbows with many famous musicians, including John Conlee, Pat Green and Montgomery Gentry. His favorite musician was Johnny Cash.  Charles moved to Pampa in 2014 and he was a member of Soldiers for Christ Church.

Survivors include two sons, Benjamin Taylor of Round Rock and Kirby Taylor of Cedar Park; a daughter, Susha Towels of Versailles, Missouri; a brother, Leland Taylor of Skellytown; a sister, Mary Posival of Abilene; and four grandchildren.

Larry Joe Spivey passed away on Saturday March 25, 2017, at the Hospice Unit Veterans Hospital in Temple. 

He was born in Rosebud on Sept. 19, 1949.  He graduated from Rosebud High School in 1968 where he was a standout running back for the Rosebud Black Panther Football team.

He served in the United States Army Reserves and then in the Active duty Army from 1971 to 1975.  He was Honorably Discharged from both the Reserves and the Army.

Larry had a Masters Degree in outdoor sculpture.  His art work is seen all over Central Texas.  His murals are on several buildings in downtown Cameron. He always placed a member of this family into the paintings. His father is in the “12 Horsemen.”  He is in the center of the line.  His mother is the little girl sitting on top of the bale of cotton in the mural of the “family going to town.” One of his proudest accomplishments is the large eagle steel sculpture in downtown Rosebud.

Vickie L. Shuffield, 56, of Cameron, passed away Wednesday, March 29, 2017, in a Georgetown hospital. 

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron.  Burial will follow in the North Elm Cemetery. 

Mrs. Shuffield was born Oct. 18, 1960, in Cameron to Calvin H. and Patricia Lynn (Williams) Smith. She married Harold “Buddy” Shuffield on Nov. 25, 1978.  She had worked as a waitress and owned a house cleaning business for several years before earning her CNA license and working for Girling Health care until retiring.  She enjoyed fishing, spoiling her grandkids, and loving her husband and daughter and family.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her mother-in-law, Lawanda Shuffield.
