Our January Business of the Month is Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home and Goza Funeral Homes Service. 

Cameron is so proud to have this long-established business still supporting Cameron for 100+ years. Maurice and Vicki Goza have continued with tradition and actively support our community on many levels. We are blessed to have the Goza family in Cameron. Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home was established in 1908 and has been for almost a century providing Central Texas with integrity, compassion, and quality service that so many families have come to trust and depend on.

Christmas Cottage provides you an opportunity to shop for holiday gifts and decorations, get new ideas and enjoy a great lunch.  

Mark Nov. 2 on your calendar for the Christmas Cottage and Craft Fair at Bea’s Kitchen on the courthouse square in Cameron. The admission is free, so stop by and have a look at the different booths. The doors will be open from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Lunch will be available starting at 11 a.m.  We will also be having a door prize drawing during the 12-1 p.m. lunch hour! Door prizes include gift certificates to our local businesses.

For many years the Extension Education Association Clubs and the Family and Community Health Committee has worked with the Milam County Extension Office to provide this opportunity to look, shop, and eat at the Christmas Cottage and Craft Fair.  Join us on Nov. 2 for some Christmas spirit as you enjoy a great lunch and shop for holiday gifts and decorations!

Holiday Gift Idea 

The 2018 Milam County 4-H Banquet was held on Sunday, Sept. 9, at Peace Lutheran Church in Rockdale. The afternoon program gave recognition to businesses and individuals for supporting the 4-H program and to 4-Hers achieving success in their projects and contests.

The most recognized and highest award for 4-H is the Gold Star Award. This award was presented to two deserving 4-H members. Jacob Barron and Scott Widner received this award for 2018. 

The first Gold Star Recipient is Jacob Barron. He is the son of Jeff and Cheryl Barron and has been a member of the Thorndale 4-H Club for the past 11 years including his clover kid years. His main project is wildlife and fisheries and he is also very active in the beef project where he shows steers raises commercial heifers. He is also very active in leadership and the swine project. 

Seniors from across the county are invited on Oct. 10 to the Milam County Triad Senior Expo.  This is a free event open to the public.  

The event will be held at the VFW located outside of Cameron on SH 36.  Doors will be open at 8 a.m. for glucose screening and the Expo will run until 12 p.m.   This event will provide seniors and their families with information on a variety of services and products available in and around Milam County.

“We were excited to be back in Cameron for the Senior Expo this year,” says event coordinator Michelle Morgan.  “We are hoping to provide vital information to the seniors and their families in the area in regards to medical, financial and safety issues that senior citizens face on a day to day basis.  There are a number of programs and services available to seniors, and we want to bring them all together under one roof for one day.”

Milam County Extension Agent

Milam County 4-H was represented well at Texas 4-H Roundup on June 12-14. A total of 28 youth participants competed or participated in the three-day event. 

On Tuesday, the Invitational Ag Product ID teams competed and placed well. Eight participants competed with four intermediate members and four senior members. Robert Miller, Jenna Frias, Jessica Yount, and Kaleb Yount were the intermediate team and placed eighth. Abby Miller, Grant Widner, Scott Widner, and Gabriel Ramthun were the senior team and placed ninth. Grant Widner placed 10th individually. Thank you to Cindy Widner and Jocelyn Ramthun for coaching the team.

Blessings From God Food pantry

Blessings From God Food Pantry distribution dates for 2018 are: June 19 from 9-11 a.m. Mobile pantry is open every second Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Fruits and vegetables are distributed every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1-2 p.m. The pantry is located at 1300 N. Austin in Cameron.

DAV Meeting

Milam Community Theater will hold auditions for "Shrek: The Musical" on May 20 and 21 at the Williams Event Center at 6:30 p.m.

Call backs for dance will be on May 22.

Please prepare to sing one minute of a show tune that is not from "Shrek: The Musical" that shows off your greatest vocal strength. Also please be prepared to read a scene from the script with your fellow actors. All parts are ope.

MCT is looking for men and women, ages 13-100 years old of all shapes and sizes with great personality to come and be a part of this fantastic production.

The Milam Community Theater will begin a new tradition next week.

April 26-29 for the first time, MCT will feature a Spotlight performance of “Same Time Next Year.” 

This performance will be for one weekend only at the Williams Event Center in Cameron.

Additionally, new this year is a children’s camp, featuring the play “Big Bad,” performed at the Cameron City Park in June.

Ben Milam VFW Post 2010 of Cameron made a donation to Bob Yates of funds raised during the Country Bob Yates Benefit on March 17. The fundraiser raised $5,581. The members of Post 2010 would like to thank the community for their support.

Milam County 4-H members competed in the Fort Worth Plant ID contest on Saturday, Jan. 20. There were many successes and we are truly proud of them on their accomplishments.

Senior winners were: first - Kaylee Jackson ($4,000 scholarship winner); second - Heath Hollas; third - Neeraj Bhakta; fourth - Rebecca Kostroun; sixth - Patrick Cobb; and eighth - Kassidy Hundle. First place team members were Kaylee Jackson, Heath Hollas and Neeraj Bhakta. Second place team members were Rebecca Kostroun, Patrick Cobb, and Kassidy Hundle.

Junior winners were: first - Mason Lindig; third - Jenna Lindig; fifth - Ryan Luckey; and eighth - Jack Luckey. First place junior team members were Mason Lindig, Jenna Lindig, Ryan Luckey and Jack Luckey.

Great job to Coach Irby McWilliams on doing an awesome job coaching these fine young men and women.
