Nila Jean (Fuller) Gilbert

Nila Jean (Fuller) Gilbert, 84, formally of Cameron, passed away Monday, March 19, 2018, at Hearthstone Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Round Rock. 

Nila was born Dec. 1, 1933, in Yarrellton. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mable Ellen (Johnson) Fuller and Abner Z. Fuller. Her loving husband of 60 years, William E. Gilbert passed away in 2011.  Survivors are two sons, Roy Carroll Gilbert (Rita Baughman) of Round Rock, and James Lynn Gilbert of Georgetown; one sister, Glenda Ivey of Boerne; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; and her beloved dog Prissy.

Rev. James Terry Wheeless

Rev. James Terry Wheeless, 86, of Cameron died Friday, March 23, 2018, in a Cameron hospital. 

Graveside funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 27, at the Minerva Cemetery with Rev. Betty Wenzel officiating. Visitation will be held Monday from 4-6 p.m. at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home.

Rev. Wheeless, pastor of Christian Fellowship Church of Ben Arnold, was born on Dec. 2, 1931, in Freeport to Lunsford and Julia (Terry) Wheeless. He married Lois Ferree in 1954 and she preceded him in death in 2016. Rev. Wheeless served as a pastor for over 40 years spending over 20 years at the Christian Fellowship Church in Ben Arnold. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

He was also preceded in death by a son Jim Wheeless in 2014.

Alexis Patricia Cloven

Alexis Patricia Cloven, 67, of Buckholts, died Wednesday March 14, 2018, in a Cameron nursing and rehab center. Services will be at a later date.

Mrs. Cloven, a retired night manager for Walmart, was born July 10, 1950, in Germany to George E. Cassidy Jr. and Betty Ruth (Crawford) Cassidy. She married Dennis Cloven on Dec. 26, 1991, and he preceded her death on Jan. 16, 2018. She was also preceded in death by her son, Andrew Elliott Kruithof and brother, George E. Cassidy III. 

She is survived by: sons, Robert Kruithof of Buras, La., and Jerry Kruithof Jr. of Temple; daughters, Christine Springer of Buckholts and Samantha Kruithof of Burnett; brothers, Michael Cassidy and wife Patti of Claremore, Okla., and William A. Cassidy of Blaine, Wash.; sisters, Andrea Cassidy of Baton Rouge, La., and Gaylyn Knefley of Albuquerque, N.M.; and nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home of Cameron is in charge of arrangements.

Carroll R. Grimm

Carroll R. Grimm, 71, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2018, in Cypress.

Carroll, known to many as C.R., was born March 17, 1946, in Cameron, to Clinton and Ida Stoebner Grimm. He is preceded in death by both of his parents and younger brother John L. Grimm. He was baptized into the Christian faith in May 1946 and confirmed his faith on Aug. 28, 1960, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Thorndale.

C.R. is survived by Scherry Grimm and his children: daughter, Kim and partner Corey Kerr, Shawn and partner Faye Liffick, and Megan and husband Jason Wootan. He is also survived by his grandchildren and numerous family, friends, and colleagues.

Jose Ibarra

Jose Ibarra, 77, of Cameron, died Friday, March 16, 2018, at his home. 

Funeral services will be at 6 p.m. Monday, March 19, at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery at a later date. Visitation was held on Sunday, March 18, at the funeral home.

Mr. Ibarra was born April 20, 1940, in El Porveniar, Durango, Mexico, to Francisco and Isabel (Amaya) Ibarra. He married Micaela Valencia. He had worked for the City of Cameron before retiring.

Clifton M. Laywell

Clifton M. Laywell, 88, of Bryan, passed away on March 13, 2018. Cliff was born in Cameron on Aug. 2, 1929. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Bertha Laywell; and brothers, Raymond, Cecil, Ed, and Ralph Laywell.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Ellen Laywell; daughter, Kim McFall; son, Paul Laywell; and grandsons, Zachary and Brandon Kindt.

David "Len" Harris

David “Len” Harris died at his home outside the Thorndale/Lexington, Texas, area recently at the age of 78.

He is survived by his brother James “Jim” Harris and wife Linda of Austin; daughter, Deana Caffey and husband Billy of Thorndale; grandson, Joshua, also of Thorndale; and nephews, Seth Harris and family, as well as nephew Kris Hoddo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar Harris and Connie Hendon Harris Stillings; sister, June Hagan and husband Jim; and niece, Vivi Hoddo.

Len was born in San Angelo, on July 30, 1939. He served in the Navy and after leaving the navy, worked as an electrician for many years with I.B.E.W. and was currently retired.

The family will not be having any public services. In lieu of services the family invites Len’s friends and acquaintances to toast his memory and share their favorite story of “Len” at their next opportunity.

Alice DuBois

Alice DuBois, 100, of Austin and formerly of Cameron, died Feb. 26, 2018, at her home. 

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 17, 2017, at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron with Rev. Donna DuBois officiating.

Mrs. DuBois was born Nov. 4, 1917, in Cameron to Russell Bramble and Blanche (Owens) Rylander.  She married Wilburn DuBois Jr. on Feb. 19, 1938, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 3, 1974.  She had worked in the Insurance and as a real estate agent. 

She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Diane DuBois; and a granddaughter, Cheryl Newlin Frye. 

She is survived by: daughter, the Rev. Donna DuBois of Austin; granddaughter, Brook Foster; and great-grandchildren, Madison and Ashley.

Iven John Vogelsang

Iven John Vogelsang, 98, of Ben Arnold, died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2018, in a Temple hospital.

Graveside services were held on Friday, March 2, at the Vogelsang Cemetery near Ben Arnold.  Visitation was held March 1 at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron.

Iven was born to Will and Ida (Laake) Vogelsang in the Vogelsang Community on Feb. 12, 1920. He married Doris Miller on Feb. 1, 1947, in Austin and they were committed to each other and always together. A lifelong resident of Milam County, Iven was a farmer and rancher. He enjoyed working in his fruit tree orchards, gardens, and with his grapevines. Iven was a beekeeper and produced many gallons of honey. Hunting and fishing were special interests. He and Doris especially enjoyed their roses and long country drives. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren visits were always welcomed with joy.

Nellie B. Johnson

Mrs. Nellie Beatrice Johnson, 94, of Temple, formerly of Maysfield, passed away Sunday, Feb. 25, in a Temple hospital. 

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 10, at 11 a.m. in the Kathryn W. Green chapel of Green-Patterson Funeral Home in Cameron.

Mrs. Johnson was born June 26, 1923, in Maysfield to Purn and Beatrice (Renfrow) Rosemond. They preceded her in death as well as several brothers and sisters.

She was a beloved aunt to a host of nieces and nephews.
