Iven John Vogelsang

Iven John Vogelsang, 98, of Ben Arnold, died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2018, in a Temple hospital.

Graveside services were held on Friday, March 2, at the Vogelsang Cemetery near Ben Arnold.  Visitation was held March 1 at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron.

Iven was born to Will and Ida (Laake) Vogelsang in the Vogelsang Community on Feb. 12, 1920. He married Doris Miller on Feb. 1, 1947, in Austin and they were committed to each other and always together. A lifelong resident of Milam County, Iven was a farmer and rancher. He enjoyed working in his fruit tree orchards, gardens, and with his grapevines. Iven was a beekeeper and produced many gallons of honey. Hunting and fishing were special interests. He and Doris especially enjoyed their roses and long country drives. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren visits were always welcomed with joy.

Iven served in WWII.  He was a staff sergeant with the 567 Air Material Squadron in the Army.  He served in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign, stationed on Tinian Island in the Mariana Islands.  Iven earned various medals and awards including the Bronze Star.

Iven was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; son, Ben Vogelsang; an infant granddaughter; by brothers, William and Ernest; and sisters, Ida Young and Minnie Kuzel.

He is survived by: his children, John Andy Vogelsang and wife Charlene of Ben Arnold, Jean Lester of LaGrange, Linda McClure and husband Charles of Barclay,  and Bill Vogelsang of Cameron; 12 grandchildren, Clarissa Loyd, Erin Wigley, Jonathan Vogelsang, Morgan Lester (David Oppermann), Joanna Knight, Russell McClure (Elaine), Brent Vogelsang (Kimberly Gentry), Phillip Vogelsang (Sarah), Matthew Vogelsang (Katie), Taylor Vogelsang, Will Vogelsang, and Scott Vogelsang; 11 great-grandchildren, Levi Wigley, Hannah Loyd, Rowdy Oppermann, Rossi Oppermann, Caden Knight, Easton McClure, Barrett McClure, Judah Vogelsang, Bella Vogelsang, Jaeger Vogelsang, and Oakley Vogelsang; sister-in-law, Frances Vogelsang; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Memorials may be made to the United Church of Christ Cemetery Association (Vogelsang Cemetery) or First Presbyterian Church of Cameron both in care of Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home PO Box 225, Cameron, TX 76520.
