Clifton M. Laywell

Clifton M. Laywell, 88, of Bryan, passed away on March 13, 2018. Cliff was born in Cameron on Aug. 2, 1929. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Bertha Laywell; and brothers, Raymond, Cecil, Ed, and Ralph Laywell.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Ellen Laywell; daughter, Kim McFall; son, Paul Laywell; and grandsons, Zachary and Brandon Kindt.

Cliff graduated from Bertram High School in 1947. After high school he worked for Swift Purveyors before attending Southwest Texas State Teachers College in 1950.  He was drafted into the US Army in 1951, assigned to an artillery unit, and proudly served in the Korean War.  After honorably discharged as a sergeant first class, he resumed his education and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education degree.  Upon graduation, he was employed as Ag teacher at Rio Hondo High School.  In 1960 he was employed as a swine specialist with the Texas Education Agency and was later named instructor in the Animal Science Department at Texas A&M University. In 1963 he married the love of his life Ellen (Nale) Laywell.  He then worked for the Extension Service as an assistant county agent in Jackson County before joining the Farm Bureau.  Cliff served as the Texas Farm Bureau Executive Director before returning to Texas A&M University as an Extension Field Coordinator.  He also served in public relations for the A&M System for over 20 years.  During his tenure at Texas A&M University, he was co-owner of a sausage company in Austin and peach orchard in Fredericksburg.

Cliff Laywell enjoyed retirement hunting, fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren. He taught Sunday school with his wife and was an active member of First Baptist Church of Bryan.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, March 19, at Memorial Funeral Home in Bryan.  Services will be held at First Baptist Church of Bryan Tuesday, March 20, at 1:30 p.m. Interment will follow at Memorial Cemetery of College Station in the Aggie Field of Honor.  

The family would like to thank the staff at Accel College Station and Hospice Brazos Valley, for the loving care they afforded Cliff Laywell while in their care.
