Last Thursday, the Yoemen and Lady Yoe competed in their largest and most electric track meet of the year from the 44 Farms Relays in Cameron.    

The 20 competing teams and larger stage amplified the the Yoemen's results, who collected 62 points while grabbing a second place finish.   

"Last week, I was still concerned we were not in track shape yet, but having this competition is almost like Texas Relays North," said Yoemen coach Chris Bennett.  "It gets us ready for district here in a couple of weeks.  We will polish up at Academy next week and hopefully have a good showing there."

Cameron's Davion Bynaum once again won the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.84.  Likewise, Jordan Wells continued his string of strong performances in the triple jump, with a gold distance of 42-9.25. The 4x100 M Relay team of Bynaum, DJ Daniels, Sicory Smith and Tydrik Williams also continues to trim time in a first place effort. 

Just hours after the completion of the 44 Farms Relays on the late night hours of Thursday, thousands more poured into the Oxsheer M. Smith Athletic Complex on Friday for the Junior High meet.

The young Yoemen and Lady Yoe placed well all around, with all teams finishing at sixth or better in all divisional standings. Results from the meet are listed below.

7th Grade Girls

100 M Dash: Brandi Drake - 1st (13.02), Shawn Bernard - 3rd (14.38); 200 M Dash: Brooklyn Balch - 5th (30.48); 1600 M Run: Kyli Leftwich - 6th (6:54.35); 100 M Hurdles: Jasmine Donoso - 6th (20.00); 4x100 M Relay: Amelia Wimmer, Brandi Drake, Shawn Bernard, Brooklyn Balch - 2nd (55.27); 4x200 M Relay: Brandi Drake, Shawn Bernard, Claudia Campos, Brooklyn Balch - 1st (2:00.32); High Jump: McKenzie Lara - 1st (4-4), Amelia Wimmer - 3rd (4-0).

In Cameron’s first matchup with Jarrell, it took a late two-run rally in the seventh inning to pull out a district opening win.

On Monday night at Georgetown East View, it appeared as if things were headed in the same direction. The game was tied 1-1 heading to the fifth before Cameron created separation with three runs, followed up by a trio of runs in the final frame in a 7-1 win.

“Our guys got some timely hits when we needed them,” said Yoe head baseball coach John Broussard following the win. “We still have to work hard at our two-strike approach and putting the ball in play, but overall I was pretty excited and proud for our guys to get the win on the road and end up at 6-1.”

For a good portion of the 20-3A schedule, the Lady Yoe softball team has been in a majority of their games, but have not found a way to win them. On Tuesday night, it was defensive miscues that reared its ugly head in a 9-8 loss to the Lady Cougars of Jarrell.

Cameron nearly overcame errors with offensive production. In total, the ladies drew nine walks and hit two home runs. However, the five errors on defense was just too much to overcome on this night.

“A lot of if was inflicted to ourselves,” said Lady Yoe head coach Abe Vargas. “Yes, they put the ball in play, but we hurt ourselves defensively. We got behind and when you try to come back after being down like that, it’s tough. It doesn't matter who we’re playing.”

Both golf team in good shape after first half of district

The Yoe golf teams competed in the first round of District at Wildflower Country Club in Temple on Monday. After half of the competition, both the boys and girls teams are in prime position, each sitting in second place, respectively. The Lady Yoe shot a 451 collectively and Kegan Galvan and Alexis Magre both had the same 102 mark to lead the ladies. Lyndy Laurell of Rockdale leads all individual golfers with a 95. Cameron currently sits behind first place Rockdale (440) by 11 strokes. The Yoemen shot a 384 as a team on Tuesday in Temple. Nikolas Keratsopoulos was the team leader with an 86. The sophomore is just 5 strokes behind Doss Hasselback (81), the leader from Rockdale. Rockdale also leads the boys standings at 358.

This past week the Lady Yoe and Yoemen played in their final non-district tournament of the year from the Delaware golf course in Burnet. The girls, who hit the course on Tuesday, finished with a 404, while the boys, who competed on Wednesday, finished with a 374.

Lady Yoe

For the Lady Yoe, Alexis Magre led the way with a team-low 91. Keagan Galvan returned from injury and shot a 96 for Cameron. Jazmin Vaculin (99), Emily Graham (118), Julia Harwell (119) and Presley Berry (121) all shot rounds of golf.

A total of 16 teams were in the tourney that saw the ladies finish in 11th place. Cameron along with Rockdale were the only 3A or smaller schools in the event. The Lady Tigers finished in 8th with a 383. Midway finished in first with a 356.

‘I’ve been real happy with the girls team for the most part,” said head golf coach Pete Magre. We have been getting better and better throughout the year,”.

Cameron traveled to Lexington last week in what was one of the most competitive meets of the season thus far.  The Yoemen, with 85 points, finished in third place overall, while the Lady Yoe, with 41.333 points, finished in 6th. Cameron will host the big 44 Farms Relays this Thursday from the Oxsheer M. Smith Athletic Complex.

Varsity Girls

Yoe track hosts 44 Farms Relays

This week, two big track meets will take place in Cameron. Today, 20 teams from across Central Texas will be attending the 44 Farms Relays. In addition to Cameron, Austin Eastside Memorial, Brentwood Christian, Caldwell, Dime Box, Giddings, Hearne, Jarrell, La Grange, Lexington, Marlin, McGregor, Oakwood, Rogers, Salado, Smithville, Snook, Taylor, Troy and West will be attending the meet. The junior high meet will also take place in Cameron the following day on Friday.

All-District basketball

Ever since a convincing 15-0 run-rule win over Hearne on March 10, it has been a struggle for the Lady Yoe to get back in the win column. Since that point, the ladies had dropped three consecutive district contests to Lexington, Franklin, and Rogers, and had only scored a total of 2 runs in those games.

Rockdale

Cameron had potentially their top opportunity to turn things around this past Friday on the road at Rockdale. Both the Lady Yoe and Lady Tigers sat at 1-5 in district and were in search of a much needed win.

After having the game moved to Rockdale due to poor field conditions in Cameron, the Lady Tigers took advantage of home field advantage in a 6-2 win. Cameron was held scoreless throughout the first six frames and only had two hits in the contest.

The best way to end a winning streak is to begin another one. That is what exactly the Yoemen did this past week by picking up two consecutive wins over Rockdale (7-2) and Academy (8-0) to move to 5-1 in 20-3A play. Cameron has now won 13 out of their last 15 games overall with one tie in the mix.

Rockdale

Cameron used a complete effort in all three phases of the game in a 7-2 victory over Milam County rival Rockdale on Friday night from The Yards of Cameron.

The win improved Cameron to 4-1 in 20-3A and 13-4-1 overall while Rockdale dropped to 6-7-1 and 0-4.

“It's always big to get a district win whenever you can get it,” said Yoemen head coach John Broussard. “I thought our team rebounded well after a good game with Rogers that we fell short on. I thought we came out and had some good at-bats for the most part and generated some runs early.”
