Yoe drops heartbreaker to Rogers, clinches #2 in 20-3A

A standing room only crowd from the baseball rich communities of Cameron and Rogers packed The Yards of Cameron on Thursday in a game where the 20-3A district championship was on the line.

Not to come as a surprise, the teams needed 11 innings with the Eagles narrowly edging out Cameron for the second time this season, 5-4.

"We played a lot of tough games this year," said Yoe head coach John Broussard.  "We have been in situations with our backs against the wall and our guys are tough and they fight.  It didn't end up in our favor tonight, but it was a great ball game.  There is no reason to hold our heads after this game."

Rogers (18-3-1/10-0), who won the first matchup 4-2, scored 2 runs in the second and third innings, before being held scoreless all the way up until the eventual game-winning run in the 11th.

Yoemen, Lady Yoe finish third at 20-3A meet

The culmination of long hours put in by the Yoe track teams over the past few months all paid off last week at the 20-3A district track meet in Jarrell.  The Yoemen (108) and Lady Yoe (87) both finished in third place overall.

Cameron's Davion Bynaum (10.82) won the 100 meter dash over defending state champion Jaquaylin Crawford (10.83) of Rockdale.  Crawford ran a 10.53 at the state meet in 2016. Bynaum also won the 200, while the 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams finished in second place.  In total, Cameron scored points in 16 of the 18 events.

The varsity girls saw Birittney Moorer capture the district championship in the pole vault, while the 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams of Ashanti Brooks, Ahslee Balch, Destiny Anderson and Za'kara Bryson each captured gold and 40 of the Lady Yoe's 87 total points.  The JV girls (126) coasted to a district championship with a 39 point lead over second place Rockdale.

What it takes to win the Lone Star Cup

By Josh Pratt - Herald Sports

As we inch closer to the summer months, another year of sports competition will be in the books. Today, I want to go back six years and look at how the class of 2011 captured the state’s most prestigious award - the Lone Star Cup.

First off, for those that are not familiar with the award, here is a definition off of the UIL’s website: “The UIL Lone Star Cup is awarded annually to six high schools, one in each of the six UIL classifications (1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A and 6A), based on their team performance in district and state championships. The winning schools in each classification will receive the UIL Lone Star Cup trophy and a $1,000 scholarship, also presented by the UIL.  Honoring the best overall athletic and academic programs in Texas, the UIL Lone Star Cup is open to all UIL participant high schools.”

Looking back at the Yoemen in 1967 and 1968

By Bertie Shuemate

Columnist

After finishing a great 11-1 season in 1965, George Kirk would leave Yoe High to return to his alma mater, Littlefield.

The board voted unanimously to move defensive coordinator Ken Fuqua to the head job. A good decision as the Yoemen would have back-to-back district championships in ’66 and ’67.

The 1966 team would lose their first two games to rivals Taylor (19-9) and Rockdale (20-13). Cameron was a 2A team now, while the Ducks and Tigers were in 3A. The Yoemen would not lose another game until the regional finals.

Wins over Rosebud (15-6), Georgetown (28-7), and Copperas Cove (24-8), ended pre-season play.

Yoemen pick up two wins to set up primetime match up with Rogers

Heading into this past week's baseball action, the Yoemen knew they were in position for a playoff spot.  However, the sights are set much higher than that at this point as a district championship is well within reach.  With a 6-5 win over Franklin on Friday, followed up with a 8-5 win over Lexington at home on Monday, that mark was still well within reach with a showdown with district-leading Rogers on the horizon.

Franklin (W 6-5)

It took nine innings, but at this point of the season wins are all that matter in Cameron's dramatic one-run win over the Lions.  The Yoemen, which trailed by a lone run entering the top of the seventh, scored one to tie it up before eventually winning the game in extra innings.

Lady Yoe continue to show improvement in loses

Winning is not always the name of the game.  That could not be more true for the Lady Yoe softball team at this point of the season.  The playoffs are now out of reach, but there are still games to be played, which will be beneficial for a starting lineup that now contains no seniors.

Franklin (L 9-3)

If you look at just the final score, you would have been deceived on how this game actually played out.  The Lady Yoe and Lady Lions were locked in an evenly matched contest that went into the 10th inning before Franklin took control.

In the early going, whenever Franklin scored, Cameron had an answer.  Cameron tied the game up at 1 in the bottom of the first as leadoff hitter Karla Martinez hit one over the fence.  Franklin took a 3-1 lead in the third, but this time it was Kenzie Wimmer that hit a two-run home run to tie the game up for the second time.
