Yoe competes in 44 Farms Relays

Last Thursday, the Yoemen and Lady Yoe competed in their largest and most electric track meet of the year from the 44 Farms Relays in Cameron.    

The 20 competing teams and larger stage amplified the the Yoemen's results, who collected 62 points while grabbing a second place finish.   

"Last week, I was still concerned we were not in track shape yet, but having this competition is almost like Texas Relays North," said Yoemen coach Chris Bennett.  "It gets us ready for district here in a couple of weeks.  We will polish up at Academy next week and hopefully have a good showing there."

Cameron's Davion Bynaum once again won the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.84.  Likewise, Jordan Wells continued his string of strong performances in the triple jump, with a gold distance of 42-9.25. The 4x100 M Relay team of Bynaum, DJ Daniels, Sicory Smith and Tydrik Williams also continues to trim time in a first place effort. 

"Our 4x100 went down from a 42.8 to a 42.6, and that could be a 41 by the state meet, said Bennett.  "The 4x200 went off a little bit, but that is where we have a few kids banged up."

Anthony Layne, who fared well in the hurdles a season ago, competed in his first meet of the year.  The sophomore finished in second at 42.82.  

"He is a baseballer," added Bennett.  "He got hurt last year and came back late and he picked up right where he left off last year.  It is almost the exact same time the second meet last year, and this is his first meet of the year."

The Lady Yoe posted a top 10 finish overall with 24 points.  

"I thought they competed well," said Lady Yoe coach Corey Cunningham.  "We were up against some stiffer competition with the 4A schools and the flat out bigger meet with all the heats, but I think they competed well."

The larger competition did not effect Zakara Bryson.  Bryson, which moved to Cameron just this past year, led the Yoemen with a first place mark in the 100 meter dash (12.54).  

Despite not gaining any points, Cunningham also pointed out that he was proud of the 4x100 relay team of Bryson, Destiny Anderson, Ashlee Balch and Ashanti Brooks, who continue to show improvement weekly. 

"I thought our 4x100 relay was a bright spot.  Even though we did not get first place, we set a personal record on that for this year.  We keep lowering our times, so that is putting us in good shape for the district meet."

With just one week left before the district meet in Jarrell, the ladies will continue doing everything they can to improve on times.  

"As we go to Academy next week, we are looking at girls continuing to improve as we bring the pieces of this puzzle together," said Cunningham.  "We look for them to improve on their own individual efforts and make the team that much better."
