Bellville Vs. Cameron Yoe

Hurricane and tropical storm Harvey has had a major impact on games across the state of Texas. A long-list of contests have already been cancelled and Cameron’s season opener versus Bellville was one of the first to be pushed back to Saturday. The feel of the game will definitely be different for myself as well as other fans as you just don’t see Cameron playing on Saturday very often. For the actual game, it’ one of the best small school matchups in week one. The Brahmas are known for their slot-t offense, but things may be changing up a bit this season. Don’t be surprised to see some of the heavy-run formations, but there also appears to be some shotgun in the mix for 2017. Bellville’s strength will be its defensive front. Can the Yoemen generate some yards on the ground or will the big plays come via the pass? Bellville will still run the ball a majority of the time, so this will be a good test for the Yoe defensive front.

It’s not very often that you have weather cause havoc with regards to the scheduling of a football game. With the torrential rains and damage brought on by hurricane and tropical storm Harvey, football was the last thing of some people’s minds. Dozens upon dozens have cancelled school and their week one games due to severe flooding and shear damage brought on in the south and south eastern region of the state.

Bellville was one of those areas near Houston that was hit hard. However, the Brahmas were able to start practice on Wednesday, allowing the team to travel to Cameron a day later than expected to kick off the 2017 season.

“With Hurricane Harvey we had to do some moving around,” said Yoe head coach Tommy Brashear. “Bellville has been hit hard. Their coach told me they had over 30 inches of rain since it hit. They have a lot of flooding and people out of their homes and things like that.”

The Cameron Yoemen got in their final preparation for 2017 with a scrimmage at home versus Madisonville on Thursday. Overall, Madisonville did have a 5-3 scoring advantage throughout the entire scrimmage. The teams played one live quarter which ended in a 7-7 tie. It appeared to be a productive night for both teams.

“The Madisonville scrimmage was a very good scrimmage for us,” said Yoe head coach Tommy Brashear. “They were a much improved team that has a lot of kids back this year. I knew coming in they would be pretty good. Rusty Nail is the head coach and he is a good one. He is now in his second year and has his stuff established.”

Scrimmage Summary

During the controlled session of the scrimmage, each first team had two 12-sets of plays, while each second team got two 10-sets of plays to work with.

The Cameron Lady Yoe hosted what appeared to be one of their most difficult non-district matchups of the year on Tuesday with Harker Heights traveling to Yoe Gym. Heights is a 6A school with over 2,500 students, so that in itself is always a challenge for a school with five times less kids to pick from.

That did not stop the Lady Yoe from competing, and competing with an edge. Cameron lost Tuesday’s match in four games, 23-25, 26-24, 23-25, 22-25, but each set was decided by three points or less.

“We knew how athletic, quick and fast they were,” said Lady Yoe head coach Kamol Nohe. “But, we just had to play within ourselves like we practice. We just have to play the game and learn to compete. When there is a negative, we learn to compete after that. Even when we are 5 or 6 points behind, we are fighting ourselves through and that is exciting.”

Westbrook sits out third preseason game with injury

Going into Tampa Bay’s third preseason game, Dede Westbrook led the NFL in receiving yards. At the end of the game, his yard total did not change. That would be because the standout receiver had been nursing what was described as a lower body injury and was held out without any prior notice. Westbrook recently got a second opinion and could be returning back to practice and game action soon. Jacksonville will travel to Atlanta on Friday for a 6:00 p.m kickoff. That is the final preseason game of the year before the Jaguars travel to Houston on September 10 for the regular season opener.

Madisonville @ Cameron - Thursday

Cameron’s final scrimmage of the season will take place from Yoe Field on Thursday when Madisonville travels to town. As far as a background on the Mustangs, it was a struggle most of the 2016 season with just a 3-8 overall record and bi-district playoff finish. With Rusty Nail now in his second year with the program, I would anticipate this team being vastly improved. Coach Tommy Brashear and the Yoemen will be looking for improvement from week one to week two. As you would expect in the opening scrimmage of the season, there were many positives and many things that can be worked out. As Brashear noted, it’s all about getting better each and every day, and the goal is to show that tonight. I will continually focus on two key points this week: 1. The establishment of a consistent rushing threat; 2. How will the Yoemen defensive line disrupt things up front.

Teague @ Troy - Thursday

One of the more exciting moments of the year is when a football team gets to go up against an opponent for the first time. It not only gives players an opportunity to hit someone other than their teammates, but it means that the start of the new season is only weeks away.

The Cameron Yoemen got that opportunity last Friday night in Lorena. The scrimmage followed the same format as previous scrimmages with each first and second team offense getting two series apiece during the controlled portion. In the 12 minute live quarter, the Leopards punched in two scores in two attempts while the Yoemen scored once in their two possessions for a 12-7 final.

The Cameron Lady Yoe are now in the thick of their non-district schedule. Cameron just completed their second tournament of the year at Leon this past week and will be in Robinson starting today. Cameron also has regular matches sandwiched in-between all of that. One of those games occurred Tuesday evening with Gatesville coming to Yoe Gym.

Cameron started off hot as they have plenty of times this season, taking the opening set off of the Lady Hornets, 25-20.

However, the tide of momentum turned after that as Gatesville took sets three and four with the same 25-21 scores before coasting in the fourth, 25-15 to take the match.

Gracen Dach’s all around efforts on the court helped Cameron take the opener. Dach had a pair of aces early on to put Cameron up 4-3 and then 6-3. Up 24-20, she wrapped up the set by pounding home a kill in the middle of the court.

Westbrook shines in loss to Tampa Bay

For a majority of Jacksonville’s second preseason game versus Tampa Bay, the offense looked flat. That was until Dede Westbrook entered the game in the fourth quarter. The former Yoemen made his case to get into the starting rotation, hauling in 6 catches for 131 yards. The remainder of the receiving core had a total of just 121 yards throughout the entire game. After two complete preseason games, Westbrook currently leads all the NFL with 173 receiving yards. Kasen Williams of Seattle is currently in second with 147 yards. Westbrook and the Jaguars will next be in action tonight with the Carolina Panthers traveling to Florida.

For the first time this season, the Lady Yoe volleyball team got in the win column. All-in-all the ladies had a successful week of play, finishing with a 3-3 overall mark to move their season record to 3-5.

Cameron Tournament - Thursday

The Lady Yoe opened the Cameron tournament with a pair of pool games; the first coming with Mumford. The ladies did what was needed in the four set victory, 25-23, 19-25, 25-11, 25-15. Cameron closed the day in a Milam county showdown with the Milano Lady Eagles. The match was close in every set, with Milano taking it in four, 25-27, 22-25, 25-21, 28-30.
