Filing continues for the May 5 city and school elections. Four city council places and three school board positions are up for grabs.

There is now a race for Cameron’s Ward 4 seat.   Lekethia “Keke” Sims filed on Feb. 2 to face incumbent Ward 4 councilwoman Rose Mondrik. 

Kyle Nuttall and Kyle Deal will face off for the Ward 3 spot, which has been vacant since Robert Davis left the council in September of 2017.

Three incumbents have also filed to run - Mayor Connie Anderle and Ward 2 council member Robert Schiller.

Places open on the council are mayor, Ward 2, Ward 3 and Ward 4. 

Cameron ISD has three open spots on the CISD Board of Trustees. 

Incumbents Franci Denio and Greg Hoelscher have both filed for re-election.

The deadline to file for the May election is Feb. 16. Early voting begins in April.

There is now a race for Cameron’s Ward 3 seat. Assistant District Attorney Kyle Nuttall filed on Jan. 29. He will run against Cameron ISD technology director Kyle Deal for the spot, which has been vacant since Robert Davis left the council in September of 2017.

Three incumbents have also filed to run - Mayor Connie Anderle, Ward 4 council member Rose Mondrik, and Ward 2 council member Robert Schiller.

The 6th annual Mardi Gras Bash will be held Friday, Feb. 2, at Simon George Hall, 401 S. Karnes, in Cameron. 

The event raises scholarship funds for the Chris Holcombe Memorial Scholarship.

The event, which will start at 6:30 p.m., will include a Cajun food dinner, auctions including a gun raffle and activities for the kids. Adult tickets are $10 and children under 18 are $5. 

Tickets may be purchased at the Milam County Extension Office in Cameron, the Rockdale Reporter, and Rodenbeck Farm & Ranch in Thorndale.

A man is in custody following a shooting incident on Jan. 26 in Cameron.

According to the Cameron Police Department, at around 12 p.m. last Friday they received a call of shots fired in the 1500 block of North Fannin. CPD Chief Lonnie Gosch, Senior Sargeant Kris Stringer and Officer Bruce Johnson responded. 

Cameron dispatch received multiple 911 calls that a black male driving a white Cadillac fled the area. Johnson arrived on scene and spoke with witnesses while Gosch and Stringer located the vehicle in the area of 1500 block of North Jackson. 

Cameron dispatch stated that the alleged suspect was Quentel Westbrook, 24, of Cameron. Gosch and Stringer observed Westbrook and detained him for investigative purposes. During the investigation Westbrook was questioned and read his rights.  

The City of Cameron will begin construction on new water lines in mid-February.  

According to Cameron City Manager Rhett Parker, Bell Contractors will upgrade multiple water lines from one inch to six inch with new four-inch and six-inch lines on Davis, Wallace, Country Club Drive, Cleveland and Harding streets stretching from 10th to 21st Street.  

The project is estimated to cost $972,150.  This is the first phase of the water line distribution project.  This northeast section of town was selected as the first neighborhood to be rehabilitated due to the numerous water leaks and low water pressure issues.  The original two and a quarter inch waterlines were most likely installed in the 1940’s and no longer meet the demands of the heavily populated neighborhood.  New fire hydrants and cutoff valves will also be installed on all new lines that are replaced.  The existing fire hydrants will be refurbished for later use throughout the city.

County Commissioners approved a burn ban for Milam County on Monday.

Even with a significant amount of rain here in the county, there is an extensive amount of dry grass in Milam County. Cameron Fire Chief Henry Horelica requested that the court approve the ban until further notice.

Agriculture and property clearing bruns are permissable upon contacting and approval of the local fire department.

Outdoor burning of trash is permitted in appropriate covered containers.

Cameron will celebrate Opening Day 2018 at The Yards of Cameron on Feb. 3. The community is invited to come out for baseball, food and fun at The Yards of Cameron. The day kicks off with a Farmers Market featuring the music of Jerry Bethell. Everyone can join the Yoemen on the C.H. Yoe High School Baseball field for the National Anthem and First Pitch Ceremony at 10 a.m. and then follow the Yoemen to Founders Hall at 10:30 a.m. for an autograph signing and a chance to purchase Yoe gear from the Booster Club.  At 11:30 a.m. the media is invited to join the players on the field for interviews and photos. Pitch, hit and run for boys and girls ages 7 to 14 begins at 12 p.m. on the Field. The National Park Service recently announced $500,000 in grants to help fund 13 projects across the country to increase the number of listings associated with communities that are underrepresented on the National Register of Historic Places. 

Milam County has been awarded $50,000. The project consists of the El Camino Real de los Tejas Rancheria Grande National Register nomination. The project will enhance the Milam County Certified Local Government by recognizing the Spanish Colonial Historic Native Village Sites and Historic Road and Trail Segments of El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail that comprise a portion of Rancheria Grande. In particular, the Underrepresented Communities grant will prepare National Register nominations for The Connor Swales Site, the Baumann Village Site, the Bird Point Heaven Village Site, and the Wise Village Site. 

Auditions for Milam Community Theater's production of  "12 Incompetent Jurors" will be held at the Williams Event Center at 408 S. Columbus in Cameron from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 30, and Wednesday, Jan. 31.

The cast will require a total of 12-16 men and women, so all are encouraged to audition and all adult age ranges are welcome. An audition form is available on Milam Community Theater's Facebook page to be filled out in advance.

All roles are open. All auditioners will be asked to read from the script. Rehearsals for the play will typically be evenings Monday through Thursday, with the possibility of some weekend rehearsals.

The show will be directed by Jonathon Deal and produced by Jigar Bhakta. The stage manager is Victoria Trevino.
