Texas High School Coaches Association Polls

Coaches from all across the state are in San Antonio this week for the Texas High School Coaches Association convention. Guest speakers and exhibits highlight the event, but there is also the release of the preseason regional rankings. These rankings list whom the THSCA believes are the top 10 teams within each division of each classification.

The panel of THSBCA members that voted on the poll have the Yoemen down as the sixth best team in their own region. Just weeks ago, Dave Campbell’s Texas Football rated the Yoemen as the preseason number 11 team in the entire state.

The full 3A DI region III rankings: 1. Franklin (4), 40), 2. Rockdale (26), 3. Woodville (21), 4. West (19), 5. Diboll (18), 6. Cameron Yoe (17), 7. Teague (16), 8. East Chambers (15), 9. Grandview (13), 10. Groesbeck (9).

Others receiving votes: Coldspring-Oakhurst 7; McGregor 6; Orangefield 6; Lago Vista 3; Maypearl 2; Whitney 2.

Cameron is rated above Woodville, West and Diboll in the statewide rankings. Franklin earned all first place votes and returns more than any team in the state that advanced to at least the third round of the playoffs out of the region.

Meanwhile, Cameron, which finished 2017 with a 4-7 record, is the only team in the top 10 that had a losing record this past season.

Brock took home the number one spot in region I with three first place votes. Wall, Bushland, Shallowater and Whitesboro round out the top five. Atlanta (4) is number one in region II, with Mount Vernon, Kemp, Malakoff and Tatum next in order. Region IV has Goliad (2) at number one, with Yoakum (2), Edna, Hallettsville and George West filing in after that.

Elsewhere, Milano has cracked the top 10 in 2A DI region IV, coming in at sixth with 22 votes. State power Refugio (3) comes in at number one in that region. Hearne, which made headways last season with their 9-3 record and district championship, sits at number seven. Rosebud-Lott and Marlin are each receiving one vote apiece.

Granger, which received 10 total votes, slides in at number eight in 2A DI region IV. Thorndale did not receive any votes in 2A.

In Cameron’s old stomping ground of 4A (then 3A), Madisonville, which Cameron will be scrimaging, comes in at four in DII region III. Mexia, which is the Yoemen’s season opening opponent, sits at number five, with Salado (5) and Fairfield (7) not far behind.

In region III, Giddings, another one of Cameron’s non-district opponents, comes it at number

eight.

In 4A division one, La Vega (4), and China Spring (5) are moving from region IV to region II with perennial power Argyle (1).

The pollsters believe that Navasota is going to have a bounce back season, coming in at number six in region III.

Temple, which is having to jump back up to 6A competition this year, comes in at number nine in 6A region II. That region is potentially the toughest in the state, as it is the home to both Allen (1) and Waco Midway (2).
