Lady Yoe breaks even in own tourney
The Cameron girls basketball team participated in their first tournament of the season and managed to break even over the two days with a 2-2 record. Cameron won over Milano (51-21) and took a loss to Taylor (44-21) on day one. On Saturday, Cameron fell to district rival Rockdale (39-18) before bouncing back to edge Sealy (32-31).
In all games Cameron’s defense managed to lead the way, forcing a plethora of turnovers while only allowing just 34 points per ball game.
“Our defense is coming around and it’s getting stronger every week,” said Cameron coach Corey Cunningham. “I think that is going to be key for as district rolls around. With our offense not clicking quite yet, we are going to have to hold teams in low figures.”
In the win in the finale, Cameron was trailing by one point after a clutch three point shot by Sealy, but Qua Workman hit the final basket with a layup in transition.
“I just told them how coachable they were in that fourth quarter down the stretch when the game was on the line,” said Cunningham. “Sealy hit that three with under a minute to play and they could have wilted and made some bad decisions, but they did exactly what they were asked to do. I thought they showed a lot of poised.
Cameron will now have a week off before returning to action on the road at Austin Travis on November 28. In the meantime the team will continue to improve on their offense.
“I told the team offensively to keep at it,” said Cunningham. “Our shots are not falling yet and we are not getting the best looks yet. We are trying to be more patient to get better looks. We have to keep at it and get in the gym and shoot a lot.”
Westbrook gets first action in NFL game
History was made on Sunday as the first Yoemen made a start in a regular season NFL game. Dede Westbrook caught 3 passes for 35 yards in his team’s 19-7 win over the winless Browns. Jacksonville improves to 7-3 on the season and is currently in first place in the NFC South division. The Jaguars only had 154 yards passing and Westbrook was second on the team behind Marqise Lee’s 5 catches for 45 yards. Jacksonville will travel to Arizona on Sunday to take on the Cardinals. Kickoff is set for 3:25.
