Cameron youth baseball sends four to state

The youth softball and baseball teams in Cameron are having plenty of success this summer. A week after softball sent three teams to the state tournament, the boys matched that effort as four teams will be competing for the title of the best in Texas.

The first team to clinch their spot was the Cameron Astros out of the six and under t-ball division. The Astros won the 8-team district tournament at Temple and got by the likes of Rogers (2), Belton (3), Westphalia (2) and Rosebud. Next week’s state tourney will be in Belton.

In the eight and under coach pitch division, the Cameron Yankees (1st) and Cameron Rangers (2nd) both advanced out of district. Included in the Temple tournament were Harker Heights (2), Lampasas (2), Temple (2) and one other Cameron team. The state tournament will be at Blooming Grove.

The final team to advance on to state was the Cameron Rangers out of the 12 and under league. The Rangers won their own district tournament in Cameron, getting past a pair of teams from Temple and Rogers and their league counterparts from Cameron. The Rangers will be competing in Brownwood next week.

Cameron youth track runners earn trip to state

Kelton Driska recently qualified for the Texas Amature Athletic Federation State Track Meet to be held July 28-30 in McAllen as part of the Temple Flyers Track and Field Club. He is the lead-off leg of his teams 4x400m relay that earned the Bronze at last week's Regional TAAF Meet in Waco. Kelton is a straight A student at Cameron Elementary School where he will be a 4th grader this fall. He also plays Football, Soccer, Basketball, and Baseball.

Damon Flemings Jr., Timothy Grice and Yierra Flemings also competed in the same meet this past week in Waco. The trio, which medaled in multiple events on the day, have all earned a spot at the state tournament last this month.

10-year old Damon Flemings took home the gold in mile: 6:03, the 800m: 2:44, and a 4x400 relay. 10-year old Timothy Grice took gold in the 400m: 1:08, 4x400, and silver in the 200m: 29.3. 11-year old Yierra Flemings captured gold in the long jump (14'4.5), 4x400, and silver in the 80m hurdles with a time of 15:44.

Rockdale’s Crawford commits to Oklahoma

After gathering offers from a plethora of the top division one schools in the nation, Rockdale Tiger star receiver Jaquayln Crawford has made his decision on where to continue his football career. The soon-to-be senior has decided to take his talents to Norman and join Lincoln Riley and the Oklahoma Sooners.

The four-star receiver announced his decision via the social media outlet Twitter on Tuesday. Scout.com has Crawford rated as the 51st best receiver in the nation.

The speedy receiver will be the second Rockdale graduate to join Oklahoma in recent times. Daniel Brooks, a 2012 graduate of Rockdale, was on the roster for the Sooners at running-back the past four seasons.

Cheer Camp

The 2017 summer cheer camp will take place on July 22 from the Yoe High Gym. The camp will be from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and will be for children aged four all the way up to fifth
grade. Lunch will be provided, but all campers should bring a water bottle with their name on it. All early registered campers will receive a t-shirt. Additionally, all campers will get to cheer at a pep rally and football game. Make checks payable to Yoe High Cheerleaders.

Volleyball Camp

The Lady Yoe volleyball camp will take place from July 26 up until July 28. The camp will be at the Yoe High Gym and is for all incoming fifth through eighth graders and ninth through twelfth graders. The younger group will go from 8:30-11:30 while the older girls will work from 1:30-4:30. The cost is $50 per camper.

Football Camp

The Yoemen football camp will get underway on July 31 and will run through August 3 from the Lester and Beatrice Williams Strength and Conditioning Center and Yoe Field. The two age groups include incoming third through sixth and seventh through ninth graders. The youngsters will go from 8-10 while the older group will hit the field from 10:30 to 12:30. The cost per camper is $45. Campers will need to bring their own shorts, t-shirt, cleats and a towel. You can register the day of the camp. Please make all checks payable to Yoe Football Camp.
