Yoe golf teams wrap up non-district competition

This past week the Lady Yoe and Yoemen played in their final non-district tournament of the year from the Delaware golf course in Burnet. The girls, who hit the course on Tuesday, finished with a 404, while the boys, who competed on Wednesday, finished with a 374.

Lady Yoe

For the Lady Yoe, Alexis Magre led the way with a team-low 91. Keagan Galvan returned from injury and shot a 96 for Cameron. Jazmin Vaculin (99), Emily Graham (118), Julia Harwell (119) and Presley Berry (121) all shot rounds of golf.

A total of 16 teams were in the tourney that saw the ladies finish in 11th place. Cameron along with Rockdale were the only 3A or smaller schools in the event. The Lady Tigers finished in 8th with a 383. Midway finished in first with a 356.

‘I’ve been real happy with the girls team for the most part,” said head golf coach Pete Magre. We have been getting better and better throughout the year,”.

All the previous results up to this point are now in the rear view mirror for Cameron, as everything now comes down to the district tournament.

“I have been telling the girls that all of these other tournaments are practice for district and the regional tournament. In district, we have to finish in the top two. We know Rockdale is really good and we will have to play very well.”

Cameron will be off this week before the beginning of the first round of district. That will Galvan, who has missed a few tournaments with an injury, time to get back in golf shape.

“We need to get Keegan Galvan back healthy and get her back in shape and get her stroke back,” said Magre. “It’s been a month now but she’s back now and I think we’re headed in the right direction.”

Yoemen

The Yoemen matched the Lady Yoe with an 11th place finish out of same 16 team field in Burnet. Nikolas Keratsopoulos once again led Cameron with an 85 on the day. Freshmen Kobe Young continued his string of consistent performances with a 93. Stockton Kruse (98), Luke Green (98) and Andrew Ortiz (102) totalled up the Yoemen’s score. Jale Walzel (98) and Jordan Young (107) were medalist for the Yoe.

Much like the girls side, the field of teams for the boys was filled with a majority of 4A to 6A schools. Rockdale finished one spot better than Cameron at 10th with a 358. Round Rock won the tournament with a blistering 297.

“I’ve got high expectations for them to get through to regionals this year,” said Magre on the Yoemen’s outlook on district. “ We have a chance. I have not seen all the other teams. Rockdale is once again very good and they are always very good. We’d have to play really well to beat them. I do believe we have a chance to get second.”

For both squads, it’s real simple - finish in the top two in district and advance on to regionals.

“If we are able to win a district championship, that is icing on the cake” said Magre. “The most important thing here is to advance to the next round and put put two good days together and move on.”

The first round of district will take place at the Wildflower Country Club in Temple on April 4. The second round of district will be on April 10 from the campus of Texas A&M University.
