44 Farms ranked fourth among 100 top breeders

Whether traveling through chilly, wet Texas winter weather to bid in person or staying home and warm bidding on line and by telephone, the 44 Farms annual Prime Cut Bull Sale attracts lots of buyers. Last year’s sale featured 485 Angus bulls. This year’s sale is set for Saturday, Feb. 27, in the auction facility on the farm.

44 Farms of Cameron ranked fourth in the 2016 Beef Seedstock 100, the beef industry’s premier listing of the top 100 bull sellers in the U.S.
The list is published in the January issue of BEEF magazine. The operations were ranked by the total number of bulls each operation sells annually.
The news comes just weeks before the annual 44 Farms Spring Bull Sale, set Feb. 27 at the farm off CR 227 near Cameron.
“Last year, the response to our Seedstock 100 list was tremendous. We heard from cattle producers throughout the country about how valuable the list was to them. Cow-calf producers are spending more money on genetics to increase the value of the calves and we want to provide more information as they make cutting edge decisions,” says Burt Rutherford, senior editor of BEEF magazine.
The BEEF Seedstock 100 provides a ranking of America’s top bull sellers, all of whom market more than 200 bulls annually, and provides location, contact and breed information, as well as marketing method and sale dates.
A total of 20 beef cattle breeds are represented in the list, with Angus - the breed of 44 Farms - being most prevalent. South Dakota, Nebraska and Montana have the most operations in the top 100, followed by Kansas and Colorado, then Texas, Idaho and Wyoming.
According to the magazine article, 44 Farms sold 1,725 bulls last year through auctions and private treaty sales. 44 Farms’ Angus Strong® genetic program has gained national recognition, enhancing the farm’s reputation for quality stock.
44 Farms was founded in 1909 by S.W. McClaren. Bob McClaren, CEO, and Janet McClaren Salazar are fourth generation of the family to operate the farm. The current Angus operation started in 2003 and has grown to be the largest registered Angus operation in Texas and the fourth largest in the U.S. 44 Farms hosts four public sales each year, two sales in the spring and two sales in the fall.
