The Yoemen picked up a redemption win in Lexington as they beat the Eagles 67-55 on Tuesday night. Junior Kobe Young had an outstanding night with 30 points for the Yoemen.

With the win the Yoemen improve to 11-9 on the season and 6-4 in district play.

The Yoemen were ahead on scoring for the whole game until the fourth quarter but Lexington just could quite catch up to them. The Yoemen ended the first quarter up 15-13. The score at the end of the half was 28-25.

The Yoemen came out after the half to score 25 points in the third quarter. Lexington scored 12. The Yoemen put up 14 in the fourth quarter and Lexington put up 18.

Young was the top scorer. Others scoring for the Yoemen were Nico Vargas with 10, Calvin Stewart with eight, Dre Booze with seven, Thomas Melton with six, Kadrian Hammond with four, and Greg England with two.

The Yoemen played a close first half with archrival Rockdale on Tuesday night but pulled ahead in the second half and the Tigers never quite caught up.

Cameron won the game 43-39.

The first quarter saw Cameron up 12-10 over Rockdale. The Tigers would trail the rest of the game. After the second quarter Cameron was ahead 22-20.

Cameron scored ten in the third quarter and 11 in the fourth quarter. Rockdale added seven in the third and 12 in the fourth.

Kobe Young was the top scorer for the Yoemen, getting nine points. Kadrian Hammond and Calvin Stewart each added eight points. Rounding out the scoring were: ZaKorien Spikes with six, Dre Booze with five, Greg England with four, and Thomas Melton with three.

Mason Monzingo lead the Tigers in scoring with 11 points. Kobe Mitchell and Zac Davis added eight points and seven points respectively for the Tigers. 

With the win the Yoemen go to 8-8 on the season, 3-3 in district play. 

The Taylor Ducks and Diamond Valley Eagles took top honors from the Cameron Chamber of Commerce Christmas Classic last week.

Taylor won first place on the boys side and Diamond Valley, Australia, took the top spot for the girls.

Taylor defeated Diamond Valley 51-46, Cameron 69-50, Manor New Tech 71-34 and Marble Falls 66-60 to claim the title.

Yoemen

The Yoemen came out of the gate strong with a 75-28 win over Manor New Tech to open the tournament on Thursday. 

Dre Booze led the Yoemen with 17 points, Thomas Melton added 14 and Nico Vargas added 13. Other scorers for the Yoemen were: Za’Korien Spikes with eight, Braden Brasher with ten, Kobe Young with seven, Calvin Stewart with two and Chris Johnson with four.

The Yoemen then fell to Taylor 69-50 in their second game on Thursday.

One of the most anticipated sporting events in Cameron will return next week.

The Cameron Chamber of Commerce Christmas Classic will host a total of 15 girls’ teams and 15 boys’ teams in tournament play over two days, featuring three teams from Australia.

Tournament play will begin on Thursday, Dec. 27, at 11:30 p.m.

On the girls side of the action Pool A will consist of Cameron, Austin Travis and Rosebud-Lott; Pool B will consist of Australia 1, Iola and Hearne; Pool C will consist of Holland, Austin Lanier and Aggieland Home School; and Pool D will consist of Austin Crockett, West and Australia 2.

In Pool A: The Lady Yoe will take on Rosebud-Lott at 11:30 a.m. in the Old Yoe Gym. Travis will take on Rosebud-Lott in the junior high gym. The Lady Yoe will take on Travis at 5:30 p.m. in the Yoe High Gym.

The Yoemen got back to business with a big win over Jarrell 57-45 on Dec. 14, but suffered a tough loss to Franklin on Dec. 18.

The team, lead by top scorer Thomas Melton with 12 points, was one-point behind at the end of the first quarter, but came out big in the second quarter and third quarters.

The Yoemen scored 14 points in the second quarter and 20 points in the third and Jarrell never caught up to them.

Others scoring for the Yoe were Za’Korien Spikes with seven points, Braden Brashear with five points, Dre Booze with eight points, Kobe Young with seven points, and Nico Vargas with eight points.

The Yoemen suffered a tough loss to Franklin on Dec. 18, 45-41.

Scorers were: Dre Booze with 14, Za’Korien Spikes with nine, Kobe Young with eight, Braden Brashear with four, Calvin Stewart with four, Thomas Melton with two. 

The Varsity now sits at 0-1 in district play and 6-8 on the season. 

Several Lady Yoe volleyball players garnered All-District honors this year.

Carley Tucker was named First Team All-District and Darci Denio was named Second Team All-District

All-District Honorable Mention went to Makenzie Wimmer, Gracen Dach, and Ja’Kerra Holt.

Several Lady Yoe players were named to the Academic All-District list including Gracen Dach, Darci Denio, Makenzie Wimmer, Carley Tucker, Marly Spink, Madison Brunson, Ja’Kerra Holt, and McKenzee Layne.

Dach was named to First Team Academic All-State. Denio and Wimmer were named Second Team Academic All-State.

In additon Tucker was also named the Semper Fidelis Player of the Year by Max Preps and the U.S. Marines.

The Yoe Boys Basketball team suffered a tough loss on Monday night, falling to Hearne 62-52.

Cameron was on par with the Eagles throughout the first quarter. They ended the quarter trailing Hearne 15-11, but the Eagles had a big second quarter that gave them a 10-point lead going into the half that the Yoemen couldn’t catch up to. 

The Eagles scored 24 points In the second to give them a 39-26 lead. 

Cameron would score 11 points in the third quarter and Hearne would add 13 points. In the fourth quarter Hearne would score 10 points and Yoe put up 15 points but couldn’t catch up to the Eagles. The final score was 62-52.

“We just got our team complete this week after football season,” Coach Nick Burns said. “Hearne has been out of football for a long time, so they ran over us a little.”

Burns said the Yoemen are still getting their feet under them after football season and working to get into basketball shape.

Several outstanding Yoe players and Coach Tommy Brashear have earned All-District honors for the 2018 season.

The District MVP was junior running back and linebacker Nico Vargas, who paced all runners in rushing touchdowns during the regular season. 

Senior standout defensive lineman Anthony Steamer was named Co-Defensive MVP. Eduardo Gil was named Defensive Newcomer of the Year. Tommy Brashear was also picked as Coach of the Year. 

First team selections were: quarterback Braden Brashear, running back Anthony Steamer, wide receiver and return specialist Kadrian Hammond, wide receiver Kobe Young, offensive lineman Frank Ibarra, offensive lineman Caleb Hubnik, offensive lineman Dominic Lewis, linebacker Alex Alonso, linebacker Ulices Cardona, linebacker Patrick England, linebacker Rigo Valdez, defensive back KaZirrius Holt, defensive back Thomas Melton, defensive back Calvin Stewart. 

Cameron has been in the third round of the playoffs all but two times since their drop down in classifications.  East Chambers has been there twice in that same time span.  Both of those third-round playoffs runs have ended with losses to Cameron, and the Yoemen are looking to make it three in a row this Friday night with a trip to the state quarterfinals on the line.  

Cameron took down East Chambers, 45-25, in 2010 and then 54-21 in the 2014 playoffs.  In 2010, the two played at Shenandoah’s Woodforest Bank Stadium, which is exactly the same spot where this game is going to take place on Friday night at 7 p.m.  Cameron will be the visitors. 

“We have played them twice and beat them pretty good those two times, but looking at them this year I feel like they are a little more athletic,” said Brashear.  “It seems to me that they have a lot of weapons.  Their quarterback is a dual-threat and they like to run the ball with him and he has a cannon of an arm.”

It’s always a good thing when Thanksgiving rolls around and you get the opportunity to talk a little Yoemen football.  After you get your fill of turkey on Thursday, Yoe fans will be making the trip over to Madisonville to see their team take on Diboll in the area round of the class 3A playoffs.  

“It’s always a goal and you want to be playing football on Thanksgiving,” said Yoe coach Tommy Brashear.  “In the coaching profession you are having a good year if you are playing around Thanksgiving.  In Cameron we get to play a lot this time of the year and a lot of people do not get to do that.  I am very blessed to be a part of Cameron Yoe.”

Cameron is coming off of 49-28 win over Whitney while Diboll had to erase a two-score first-half deficit in a 31-26 win over Buna.  What makes this matchup intriguing is that these two programs have never played each other previously.
