Douglas Lennett Williams

Douglas Lennett Williams, 84, of Buckholts, went to be with his Lord and Savior on June 11, 2018, surrounded by family. 

Born on Dec.12, 1933, in Milam County, Douglas was the only child of Elmer and Jewel (nee: Baskin) Williams. Doug spent his early life in the Buckholts community, graduating valedictorian from Buckholts High School in 1952, and going to work for Burroughs Adding Machine Company in Fort Worth. On April 11, 1953, he married his lifelong love, Virginia Winfrey, in a double wedding ceremony in Sharp. Following marriage, Doug was inducted into service with the 82^nd Division 325 Airborne Infantry Regiment and moved to North Carolina to begin his military service. Upon his honorable discharge as a Master sergeant, Doug returned to Texas and began a distinguished career in business. He began working for Alcoa in Rockdale and then in Point Comfort. While working, he received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Texas at Austin, where he was a member of Delta Sigma Pi. 

After college, Doug began working for the Sterling Drugs headquarters in NYC. While there, he became Divisional Manager over Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana, and he moved his young family from Glen Cove, Long Island, to Bloomfield Hills, Mich. Longing to return to his beloved Texas, Doug boldly grabbed an opportunity in 1967 to move his family to San Antonio, and he went into business for himself. In 1973, Doug had another business opportunity and moved his family back to Buckholts. Doug retired as an auditor for the Office of Inspector General for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and he returned to his hometown, where he became active in community service. 

Doug was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church. He served on the city council and water board, was an active member in the Buckholts Lions Club and SPJST Lodge #15, serving as president for many years. Doug was a 50+ year Master Mason and served on the Board of Directors for the Buckholts State Bank.

Doug is survived by his wife of 65 years, Virginia Williams; his children, Doug Williams and wife Bea of Rockdale, Sherry Dusek and husband Lanny of Greenville, S.C., and Monte Williams of Buckholts. He is survived by six grandchildren, Dr. Alicia Huppe and husband Matt of McKinney, Robin Dusek of Austin, Dr. Raven Applebaum and husband Phillip of San Antonio, Jacques Williams of Cedar Park, Dr. Whitney Crossland and husband Chance of Hale Center, and Tanner Williams of San Marcos. Doug is also survived by five great-grandchildren, Addison Applebaum, Aliza Applebaum, Asher Applebaum, Julianna Huppe, and Tatum Crossland.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 16, 2018, at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron. Interment will be at Hope Lutheran Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 427, Buckholts, TX  76518 or to Hope Lutheran Memorial Park.
