Lady Yoe end season with pair of defeats

There is no question that Cameron had been playing better softball the second half of 20-3A league play.  The ladies had won three games in a row at one point and took Lexington down to the wire in a 8-6 loss not too long ago.  

However, the positive momentum gained has faded in the final two games of the season as the ladies fell hard to both Rogers (13-3) on the road Friday and then to rival Rockdale (14-5) at home to close out the season on Tuesday.  Cameron finishes 2018 with a 5-9 record in 20-3A. 

Rogers (L 13-3)

Rogers is 23-1 and state ranked for a reason, and they flexed their muscles on Friday in a 13-3 win over Cameron.  The win marks Rogers’ ninth of the district season by 10 or more runs.  

The game was fairly close through the first few innings as Rogers led 2-1 after Cameron had scored a run in the top of the third on a Kenzie Wimmer single to center.  

However, Rogers would gain back all momentum in the bottom half of the inning when Kylia Huhman homered to left, pushing the lead to 4-1.  The long ball proved to be even more costly in the fifth, when Jenna Lazarow homered to left, putting the game out of reach at 10-1.  Karla Martinez and Ashlee Balch would drive in runs in sixth, but Rogers put the game away in the bottom half of the frame. 

Friday’s Results: Rogers 13, Cameron Yoe 3; Academy 14, Franklin 1; Rockdale 8, Lexington 6; Jarrell over Hearne 

Rockdale (L 14-5)

When Rockdale, defeated Lexington on Friday (8-6) it ended Cameron’s hopes for the playoff spot.  Cameron would have needed to defeat Rockdale on Tuesday to force a tie had Rockdale lost that game.  

Regardless, Rockdale did not give up an inch, pounding out 17 hits in a 14-5 win over Cameron.  

A total of eight different Lady Tigers batters recorded hits and six had multi-hit games.  

Rockdale sent a total of 19 batters to the plate in the second and third innings alone and scored 11 runs in the six outs.  

Karley Leopold capped off the scoring with a solo home run center to increase the lead to 11-0. 

Kenzie Wimmer finished off a strong junior campaign by driving in all of Cameron’s runs in the game.  Wimmer had a two-rbi single in the third and then a three-run home run in the fifth to push the score to 13-5 and extend the game past the early run-rule.

Tuesday’s Results: Rockdale 14, Cameron Yoe 5; Academy 6, Lexington 3; Rogers 19, Hearne 0; Jarrell 10, Franklin 0.

Yoe boosters electing officers soon

As the 2018 sports season comes to a close over next few months, the Yoe Athletic Boosters are looking to fill new roles in leadership. On Monday, April 23 the boosters will be electing new officers from the field house at Yoe High at 6:00 pm. A meal will be provided for all of those in attendance.

Yoe golf at regionals next week

After finishing second at district, both Yoe golf teams will be competing at the regional golf tournament next week with a trip to state on the line.  The boys are scheduled to compete on April 23 and 24 while the girls will tee off on April 25 and 26.  

The future for Yoe golf continues to look promising as on Monday the junior high boys finished in the one through five spots, while Shawn Bernard from the girls side finished as silver medalist in their own tournament.  

For the boys, Kaden Kuzel won gold with a 40, Mason Vaculin took home silver with a 44, Tate Stroud won the bronze with a 48, Dillan Akin was fourth with a 49, and Karsen Galvan was fifth with a 51.  Shawn Bernard took home silver for the girls with a 62.  

Milano athletes participate in area track meet

Milano track and field athletes participated in their Area meet on Monday in Thrall, with several contestants advancing to regionals.

The varsity boys’ team earned the Area team title, outscoring second place Burton by 38 points.

The varsity girls finished sixth in the team standings with 63 points.  Thrall won the team total with 113 points.

The top four finishers in each event advance to the Class 2A Region IV meet that will be held April 27-28 at Texas A&M University-Kingsville.
