Lady Yoe Golf competes in Burnet

It was a tournament that featured primarily 5A and 6A schools, but the Lady Yoe golfers managed to hold their own by finishing in eighth out of 16 competing teams in Burnet.

Cameron shot at 365 on Monday from Delaware Springs, good enough for a tie with 6A Belton.  Senior Keagan Galvan once again paced her team, coming in with an 84. Jazmin Vaculin was just three strokes behind at 87, Carley Tucker came in with a 93, Emily Graham sat at 101 and Presley Berry rounded out the scoring at 112.

The Yoemen will be teeing off in Burnet on Thursday.  This will be the final tune-up for both teams before the first round of district from Texas A&M on April 2.  The second round will take place at Wildflower in Temple on April 9. The Lady Yoe are looking to make it 8 straight trips to the state tournament as a team. The Yoemen will be looking for back-to-back appearances.  

 

Bell finishes seventh at state powerlifting meet

Over the weekend, Cameron had a lifter place within the top 10 of her weight class from the girls state powerlifting meet in Waco. Daejanay Bell placed in seventh in the 259+ weight class to cap off the 2018 season.  Bell came in with 1,025 pounds lifted, and totalled 470 pounds in the squat, 225 in the bench press and 330 in the deadlift.  Franklin’s Hailie Morehead won the class with 1,180 total pounds.  

Selene Vargas was also scheduled to compete but was disqualified in the squat, which ended her day early.

Milano track results

Milano’s Parker Jones and Devonte Jones participated at the Texas Southern Relays in Houston on March 16-17.  Both placed sixth in their individual events.

Parker Jones ran the mile in four minutes and 32 seconds.

Devonte Jones finished the 300 hurdles in 39.9 seconds.

Eagle and Lady Eagles track and field athletes also competed in Thrall on March 8.

Three Eagles named to All-Brazos team

The 2017 All-Brazos Valley football team was released last week and saw three Milano Eagle players receive honors.

Kyle King earned first team honors at defensive back and punter.  It is the second time King has earned the honor at punter. He punted 19 times for 704 yards, giving him over 4,400 yards and a 44 yard per punt average for his career.

The 6-3, 205-pound senior had 92 tackles at defensive back (55 of them solo), two tackles for loss, four interceptions, 11 pass breakups and three forced fumbles.  He was also the Eagles’ quarterback, throwing for 2,059 yards and 28 touchdowns and rushing for 1,191 yards and 21 touchdowns.

Joining King on the first team defense was lineman Eddie West.  The 6-0, 215-pound senior recorded 80 tackles, 19 of them for loss, four sacks and eight quarterback pressures.  He also had a blocked punt, two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries, returning one for a touchdown.

Trebeaux Broussard earned a first team offense nod at offensive lineman.  The 6-1, 230-pound senior graded out at 94 percent with 42 pancakes and no sacks allowed.

Fellow Milano senior Keaton Popham earned All-Brazos Valley all-academic honors.  Popham is currently ranked fifth in his class, has a 3.30 grade-point average and is a member of the National Honor Society.

The group helped the Eagles to the best recorded in program history in 11-2 before falling in the third round of the postseason.
