Young to face Melde in November

Two newcomers will face off in the race for County Judge in November.

Republican Steve Young beat out former judge Frank Summers to earn a spot on the November ballot. He will face Democrat Jared Melde.

Young garnered 1,865 votes to Summers’ 1,386 votes.

In the race for County Treasurer, current sitting treasurer Linda Acosta costed to a win with 2,018 votes compared to challenger Jennifer “Jenger” Epperson-Moran’s 975 votes.

Current Precinct 2 County Commissioner Donald Shuffield will remain in office. He received 389 votes, while challengers James Condry and Doug Baker received 158 and 220 votes respectively.

The race for Justice of the Peace in Precinct 1 was a closed one between Greg Hoelscher and Robert Hollas, but Hoelscher came out on top. Hoelscher received 480 votes to Hollas’ 453 votes.

In the race for Justice of the Peace in Precinct 2 incumbent Sam Berry won again. Berry received 427 votes and challenger Don Schuerman received 341.

Several primary candidates were unopposed and will each win election: incumbent Jeff Muegge for Precinct 4 County Commissioner, Jodi Morgan for County Clerk, incumbent Karen Berry for District Clerk, incumbent Andy Isaacs for Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace, and incumbent Gary Northcott for Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace. 

Statewide, incumbent U.S. Senator Ted Cruz easily deflected a challenge from Bruce Jacobson, Stefano de Stefano, Geraldine Sam, and Mary Miller. Cruz will meet Democrat Beto O’Rourke in the November general election.

For state governor, incumbent Republican Greg Abbott easily swept past his competition in his bid for another term. For the Democrats, things go to a runoff election. Former Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez and son of former Governor Mark White, Andrew White, will face off again before the November election.

Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick beat challenger Scott Milder and will face Democrat Mike Collier in November.

State Senate District 5 incumbent Charles Schwertner defeated Harold Ramm to move on. The Democrats elected Meg Walsh as their candidate to oppose him in November.

State Rep. Bill Flores was unopposed this go around, but will face a Democratic choice in November. Democrat Rick Kennedy defeated Rockdale-native Dale Mantey.
