Yoe struggles in Cameron tourney

The Cameron tournament is generally regarded as one of the toughest week two tournaments around the state.  The host team found the competition level to be stout in 2018, going 0-2-1 over three days of play. 

Gateway Prep (4-0) and Clifton (2-0-1) both went undefeated in the tournament.  

Caldwell (L 6-4)

The Yoemen fell behind Caldwell in game one 4-0, and could not complete a comeback in a 6-4 loss.  

Cameron will look back at defensive miscues in the defeat, as only two of the six runs were earned through the six innings. 

The Hornets got one of their earned runs in the top of the first when Ethan Blinka drove a double to left fielder Kadrian Hammond.  Three more would be added in the top of the fourth. 

After only one single from Jason Llanas through the first four innings, the Cameron bats awoke in fifth. Rick Fuentes and and Luke Greene both singled to load the bases with one out.  Two batters later, right fielder Zack Andress came up with a clutch two-out, three-RBI double to center field, knotting up the game at four. 

The lead would not last as in the top of the sixth an error led to two more unearned runs to cross the plate.  Cameron got the first two on in the bottom of the sixth, but the rally faded and time expired.  

Rick Fuentes finished 2-3 with one run scored, while Andress (three RBI) and Hammond (one RBI) drove in all the runs.  

Taylor (L 3-0)

Cameron simply could not get their offensive going with only four hits and no runs in a 3-0 loss to Taylor in game two.  

Taylor’s Miguel Torres was dominant for the Ducks, going all seven innings, giving up the four hits, only two walking while striking out 11 Yoemen.  

Yoe ace Jason Llanas was Cameron’s top performer, going down as the hard-luck loser on the mound. Llanas gave up eight hits, walked none and struck out six in his seven innings pitched.  Llanas also collected two of the four hits, finishing 2-3.  

Buffalo (T 4-4)

In the finale on Saturday morning, Cameron built a 3-0 lead but had to rally late to end in a 4-4 tie. The Yoemen built their first lead of the tournament in the bottom of the first when Llanas hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Brashear, which had reached base on an error to begin the game.  

In the second, Garrett Roeder doubled and Fuentes was hit by a pitch.  After a balk, Cameron had runners at second and third with no one out.  

Hammond hit a RBI groundout to first and Brashear hit a grounder to short to bring in the third run.

The Bison scored one in the third and took the lead in the fourth, 4-3.  

Cameron tied the game in the fifth just before time expired when Fuentes ground into a fielder’s choice, scoring Alex Alonso. 

District Opener

Cameron fell to Jarrell on the road on Tuesday in the 20-3A opener, 9-5.  The Yoemen fell behind 9-2 and the rally fell short, moving the Yoemen to 0-1.  

Franklin Tournament

Cameron will travel over to Franklin for their final tournament of the year this Friday and Saturday in Franklin. 

The tournament will take place at the Franklin Ranch complex, which features four different baseball fields. This allows for 32 teams to compete, making it one of the largest small school tournaments of the year.  

The tourney features pure bracket play, and the Yoemen will open with Miles on Friday morning at 9 a.m. on field six. If the Yoemen win, they will advance to play the winner of Georgetown East View and Garrison. If Cameron loses, they will play the loser of that same game.  Either game would be at 1 p.m.
