Softball posts winning record in Gatesville, falls hard in district games

Gatesville (L 16-7)

The Lady Yoe had mixed results this past weekend in the Gatesville tournament, but finished with a winning record at 3-2. 

Cameron opened the tourney with a tough, four-inning loss to host Gatesville, 16-7 in four innings.  The Lady Yoe scored two runs in the first and three more in the third, but Gatesville already had 10 runs through two innings and added on four more in the fifth.  

Cameron did have four errors in the contest, but all runs were earned and were charged to Madison Brunson (10) and Alejandra Ibarra (6) through their two innings of work. 

Offensively, Cameron did produce 12 hits, with four players coming in with two or more knocks. Leadoff batter Brittany Hatter was a perfect 3-3 with two runs scored.  Kenzie Wimmer was 2-3 with two runs and 2 RBI, Karla Martinez was 2-3 with one run and four RBI and Ashlee Balch was 2-2.  

Florence (W 10-2)

Cameron evened their tournament record by coasting by Florence in game 2, 10-2.  The ladies managed to score runs in all five innings of the game and had all but one batter reach base at least once in the game.  

Hatter and Wimmer both had two RBI apiece. Brunson also had a strong performance from the circle, tossing two innings of one hit ball while giving up zero runs.  

Valley Mills (W 14-2)

Cameron continued their strong offensive output in game three by pounding Valley Mills with 15 hits in a 14-2 run-rule win.  

All but one Lady Yoe batter recorded a hit and Kenzie Wimmer had another outstanding performance, going 4-4 with a double, two home runs and seven runs driven in.  

Martinez, out of the clean-up spot, was also 3-3 with a home run, three runs scored and four runs driven in.  

Ibarra picked up the win: 4 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  

Early (W 10-4)

The Lady Yoe bats would not cool down in game four, as the ladies produced 14 hits and yet another double-digit scoring effort in a 10-4 win over Early.  

Brunson was key from the plate in this game, going 3-3 with a double and five runs driven in.  Wimmer (3-3, 3R) and Keeli Floyd (3-3, 2 RBI) were also perfect with the bat.  

Brunson was the winning pitcher: 5 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 3 K

Copperas Cove (L 6-4)

In the finale, Cameron’s bats finally cooled off a bit in a 6-4 loss to 6A Copperas Cove, 6-4. 

Brunson carried over her strong performance from the previous game with a 1-3 finish at the plate with the only two runs driven in.  

Cameron did commit six errors in the game, causing Brunson to take up the loss.  The junior pitched the first three innings and only gave up three unearned and one earned run.  Ibarra closed out the final two innings with three hits and one run given up.  

Jarrell (L 11-1)

The Lady Yoe were not able to pick up their first district win over the road Monday at Jarrell, falling for the second consecutive time in run-rule fashion.  

Cameron had fallen to Academy last Wednesday in the district opener, 16-1 in four innings, and then to Jarrell on Monday, 11-1 in five innings.  

The Lady Yoe lost control early in both games, trailing Academy 16-0 after four innings and 7-0 to Jarrell after just three innings of play.  

In the loss to the Lady Cougars, Cameron simply had a hard time putting the ball on the ball, scattering just three hits, with none coming from the top four of the order. 

Brunson took the loss in both contests. 

Cameron will look to rebound with Hearne at home on Friday.  Spring break is next week, so Cameron will host Lexington on Monday (5/7 p.m.) and travel to Franklin on Tuesday (12/2 p..m.) before taking the rest of the week off.
