20-3A Girls Basketball Playoff Results

Cameron’s basketball district managed to split in the opening round of the playoffs, with district champion Academy and number two seed Franklin advancing, while three seed Jarrell and four seed Rogers bowed out of the playoff race.

Academy, which is ranked at the number four team in the state, crushed Troy in their game, 59-14. Franklin had a very similar showing, blowing by Whitney, 61-29. Jarrell had a 21-19 lead over West at the half, but fell hard in the end, 57-43. Rogers also fell to Marlin, 69-42.

Academy advances to play Keene Smith, which knocked out Buffalo, 64-49, while Franklin gets Grandview, which took down Leon, 51-43.

Both golf teams place in top 5 at Caldwell

Despite poor weather conditions, both the Yoemen and Lady Yoe golf teams managed to compete in Caldwell this Monday and Tuesday.

The ladies finished in third place overall, shooting a 404. Brenham was second at 391 and host Caldwell came in first at 382.

Keagan Galvan continued her impressive stretch of early performances, finishing as the third medalist with a 93. Carley Tucker (99), Emily Graham (106), Jazmin Vaculin (108) and Presley Berry (115) all competed for Cameron.

The boys’ round was shortened to just nine hole because of weather conditions, and the Yoemen finished in fourth with a 175. That was just five strokes behind winner Sealy, which sat at 170. Columbus was second at 173 and Bellville came in third at 174.

Nikolas Keratsopoulos captured gold with his 35 in the nine holes. Stockton Kruse (46), Luke Green (47), Jale Walzel (47) and Braden Brashear (59) were also in the mix.

Cameron’s Martinez named to FCA Team

A Lady Yoe senior has recently been selected to play in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Softball game.

Standout shortstop Karla Martinez was selected to represent Cameron for the Blue team in the game, which will take place on June 8 from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $5.

Cameron sends two wrestlers to regionals

Despite having to compete against 5A competition, Cameron continues to find success in wrestling.

Both Johnvanique Porter and Ebonique House have advanced out of district to the regional competition this Friday and Saturday from Bryan High School.

Porter finished in second place while House was third in their respective weight classes.

Other competitors for Cameron included Seth Perez, which came in sixth and Alfredo Ramos, which was fifth. Both won a match a piece. Ian Duffy and Marcos Vargas-Perez both competed for the JV.

“We just needed to work harder,” said Keen on his thoughts after district competition. “We had trouble getting enough people to practice for various reasons. If the girls wrestle well they will have a chance to place at region.”

Another Westbrook signs with Blinn

Iverson Westbrook is following in the shoes of his brother Dede Westbrook. On Tuesday, the Yoe High senior signed with Blinn College to continue his football career. The soon-to-be Buccaneer was a standout receiver for Cameron, leading the team in receiving yards (965) and receiving touchdown (15) in 2017. Westbrook was named the 10-3A offensive MVP and was a third team all-state selection by the Texas Sports Writers Association.

Lady Yoe wins back-to-back district matches; boys drop two

After falling to Jarrell in the district opener, Cameron is now looking at a two-game winning streak. The ladies first picked up a 3-2 win over Florence on Friday. In the win, Shelby Lara, Darci Denio and Cailynne Hoelscher eached scored a goal, with Hoelscher’s being the deciding score.

Regulation was not enough time for either Cameron or Academy to push across a goal as the game went into overtime on Tuesday. Karla Martinez was the hero, coming up with the game-winner to push her team’s district record to 2-1.

The boys’ fortunes were not as good, as the team was not able to generate any goals in a double overtime loss to Florence (2-0) and an loss to Academy (1-0) on Tuesday. Cameron now sits at 1-2.

Both teams will host Salado on Friday, with the girls bringing in Gateway Prep on Tuesday. Gateway Prep does not have a boys team.
