Yoe Golf begins season at Lampasas

On Monday, the Yoe High boys golf team began their 2018 season on the road at Lampasas, finishing 6th overall out of 20 teams with a score of 354. Junior Nikolas Keratsopoulos led the way with a team-low 76, good enough for 6th overall individually. Stockton Kruse shot a 86, Luke Greene was 2 behind at 88, and Jale Walzel posted a 104.

Belton A won the tourney with a 291, Belton B was second at 302 and Lampasas captured bronze with a 323.

The boys will next travel over the Mustang Creek in Taylor on Wednesday.  

The Lady Yoe officially get things going today in Lampasas.  The girls will also be participating in Taylor in Monday.  We will have a full report on both of those tournaments in next week’s edition of sports.  

 

Baseball season begins soon

The Yoe baseball team will get to compete against someone other than themselves on Feb. 6 as they host Killeen Shoemaker for their opening scrimmage. The Yoemen will also have scrimmages at home versus Navasota on Feb. 9, at Madisonville on Feb. 13 and at Giddings on Feb. 16.  Cameron was recently pegged to win 20-3A by TxHighSchoolBaseball.com’s preseason magazine.  We will have a full report on what to expect from the Yoemen in next week’s edition of sports.  

 

Softball begins scrimmages today

With the annual fall sports banquet falling on Monday, the Lady Yoe softball team was forced to move their opening scrimmage of the year at Troy to Thursday.  First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m.  In total, Cameron will have four scrimmages before they open their 2018 campaign.  The ladies are set to travel to Killeen on Saturday, host Copperas Cove on Feb. 6 and then close out the scrimmages on the road at Fairfield on Feb. 9.

Lady Yoe coach Abe Vargas will have more returning than he lost from last year. Those playing include Kenzie Wimmer, Karla Martinez, Ashlee Balch, Yareli Contreras, Madison Brunson and Qua Workman.  

“We still have a lot of youth and some inexperience this year,” Vargas said.  “I believe that the work ethic and coachability that these young ladies have demonstrated thus far will pay off throughout the season.”

The regular season will begin on Feb. 13 as Cameron hosts Madisonville from Mark Humble Softball Complex.

 

Former Yoe assistant grabs head football/AD job

Another former assistant under former Yoe head football coach Rick Rhoades has landed a head coaching job.  

Bay City offensive coordinator Brent Bennett has recently accepted the head football and athletic director position at Ganado. Bennett has been Lupe Florez’s offensive coordinator for the past three seasons at Bay City. While at Yoe, he served as the offensive line coach and helped lead Cameron to a few state championships victories.  

Bennett left Cameron for Amarillo before heading to Bay City. He also had previous stops at Buffalo and Navasota. Ganado was just 2-6 last season and finished 1-4 in 15-2A.  The Indians are expected to make the move up to 3A division II in 2018.  

 

Football Rankings to be released next week

With realignment taking place today (Thursday), I (Josh Pratt) have decided to postpone the release of my top 20 rankings until next week.  The UIL already decided that Cameron will remain in class 3A, and now the only thing to be determined is what district the Yoemen will be placed in.  We will have a full report on realignment and the rankings in next week’s edition of sports.
