Lady Yoe stumble with Jarrell, Hearne
Service Directory
Cameron's NaQuiria Gibbons had 14 points in games with Jarrell and Hearne.
Jarrell
It’s not how you start, but how you finish. Unfortunately for the Lady Yoe, they did neither of those well on Friday in a home loss to the Jarrell Lady Cougars, 54-40. Cameron scored 14 points in the second and 13 points in the third periods, but only tallied 6 points in the opening period and then 7 in the fourth, which was too much to overcome against what should be a playoff team out of the district.
Lady Yoe coach Corey Cunningham pointed to poor free-throw shooting in the first, which ultimately led to an early 14-6 deficit.
“We started off slow and got behind early,” said Cunningham. “We were 1-10 from the free-throw line early, and with an 8-points game, everything matters right there.”
Things changed late in the second period and into the third.
“We found some driving lane,” said Cunningham on his team, which scored 12 of their 14 points in the final 3 minutes of the second. “We were smart enough to dish the ball and get it to where it needed to go and it was a fun stretch while it lasted.”
A big positive came in the form of NaQuiria Gibbons’ team-high 14 points. Gibbons had been dealing with returning from a leg injury from last season and had yet to find her groove in 2018.
“What we tried to do with NaQuiria is build confidence,” Cunningham said. “As a coaching staff, we knew what they she could do. She finished the first half strong with a basket and we tried to build on the second half and I feel like she did.”

Hearne
Heading into Tuesday’s district action, Cameron had won just one game, and that was against Hearne. They fell short of picking up the sweep as another slow start cost the ladies in the end, 45-42.
Cameron was just 1-4 shooting and had 4 turnovers through the midway point of the first and trailed 13-3 after the period.
With 1:50 left in the third, Cameron would get the lead down to 31-30 when Leftwich pulled down an offensive rebound and put the ball back through the hoop.
Daniels had an identical put back in the fourth, bringing the Lady Yoe back to 45-42 with just 20 seconds remaining. Hearne would proceed to miss their next four free throws, but Cameron could not generate any more offense in the closing moments.
Cameron will look back a free throw shooting in the loss, as they attempted 36 shots but only converted on 19.
