Sub-Varsity basketball finds success in tourneys

A large majority of Cameron’s sub-varsity basketball teams were in action over the weekend in tournaments across Central Texas.

The 7th and 8th grade boys’ teams competed in the Cameron tournament on Thursday and Saturday. The 8th grade ended up in third place with a 41-32 win over Hearne. Nolan Brashear had 21 points in the game while Adam Cardona was also in double figures with 11. The 7th grade went undefeated both days and ended as tournament champions with a 36-32 win over Gatesville. Pharrell Hemphill was in double figures at 11 while Landon Green had 8 points. The 7th grade also defeated Rogers on Monday while the 8th grade fell to the Eagles.

The 7th and 8th grade girls’ teams were in the Temple. The 7th grade lost in the third place game. The ladies had a win over Belton Middle School and loses to Killeen Union Grove and Axtell. The 8th grade won the third place championship with a win over Belton, loss to Killeen, and a win over Axtell.

In the Thorndale tournament, the Cameron JV defeated Thrall (61-26), Caldwell (61-52) and Gateway Prep (25-16) to go undefeated and capture first place.

Yoe basketball struggles in Thorndale but rebounds with win over Bosqueville

In 2016, Cameron had won the Thorndale tournament with a perfect 4-0 record. Things did not go quite as well in 2017. Cameron dropped both games on day one and split contests on Saturday to finish at just 1-3. The Yoemen dropped their opener to Caldwell (56-52), a team they had already beaten twice this season. Things continued to go downhill in game two with a blowout loss to Thorndale, 84-45. Cameron rebounded with a 67-42 win over Smithville, but fell to Georgetown Gateway Prep (64-55) to end the tournament. The Yoemen did pick up a 10-point win over Bosqueville on Tuesday to improve to 5-9 on the season. The final tuneup for district will take place on Friday at Troy. Cameron will host Hearne in the 20-3A opener next week.

Westbrook scores first NFL touchdown

The Jacksonville Jaguars picked up an impressive 30-24 win over Seattle and Dede Westbrook scored his first touchdown in the process. Westbrook got the scoring going in what was a 21-point 3rd quarter with 18-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Blake Bortles. Westbrook now has 20 receptions for 235 yards and the 1 touchdown on the season. Jacksonville improves to 9-4 on the season and will be hosting Houston at noon on Sunday. A win will clinch a spot in the playoffs.

Cameron Chamber Christmas Classic Approaching

One of the most highly anticipated sporting events in Cameron each year is fast approaching. The Cameron Chamber Christmas Classic basketball tournament is set to take place on Thursday, December 28 and 29. A total of 12 boys and 12 girls teams from all across the state will be traveling to Cameron for two full days of basketball. Ticket prices: Student 2-day is $8.00 and a 1-day pass is $6.00. An adult two-day pass is $12.00 and a 1-day pass is $8.00. There will be no passes accepted for this tournament. We will have a full breakdown of the teams and pools in next week’s edition of sports.

Wrestling Update from Coach Dale Keen

Anytime I head out to any of these tournaments I wonder what the day will bring. After all we are a 3A school in the company of 5A and 6A schools. And really we are a bunch of beginners. Friday, I took the boys to a JV tournament at San Antonio Roosevelt High School. Domanique Borgas was our only division winner as he won the 220 lb. wt. division, winning 3 matches. Alfredo Ramos won the 165 lb division by winning 3 of 4 matches. Newcomer Zachary Hafley won his first match with a pin and went down fighting in his next 2 matches. Marcos Vargas, wrestling his first tournament, wrestled very well but lost two close matches. Seth Perez lost two close matches also. It would not have been surprising to not win a match so I was thrilled with their performances.

Saturday, the girls were in Austin for an all girls tournament. Johnvanique Porter and Ebonique House wrestled in the varsity divisions and both won matches. Both had losses that came only after going into overtime. It was a very satisfying day for them as we looked like we belonged on the mat with some very tough company.

The most exuberant competitor of the day for us was Patience Adcock. She won two matches to finish 2nd in the JV division. This was her 3rd tournament and like all beginners, she found the sport very challenging with no victories. She showed lots of improvement.
