He was baptized on Nov. 24, 1929, at Hope Lutheran Church in Buckholts, and he was confirmed at the same church on May 20, 1945. He was raised on the family farm in Buckholts. He attended Cameron schools and graduated from Cameron Yoe High School in 1948.
Following high school, Vernon was inducted into the service and proudly served in the U.S. Army until he was honorably discharged in July 1953.
Vernon was a people person who never met a stranger. He always had a friendly and warm greeting for everyone he met. When he was younger, Vernon liked to take his boat out, water ski, and go fishing. Vernon had a long career in the automobile industry. He worked at Hefley-Stedman Motor Company in Cameron for 30 years and in the parts department at Rockdale Ford for 10 years.
Vernon married Dorothy Ribbeck Handrick on Oct. 22, 1988, and moved to Thorndale where he owned and operated Brushy Creek Bar for 10 years until his retirement. He was a member of the Sons of Hermann and an associate member of the Thorndale Volunteer Fire Department. Vernon enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren; taking gambling trips on the bus to Oklahoma and Louisiana with his wife; and cheering on his twin granddaughters as they participated in sports at St. Paul Lutheran School and Thorndale High School. He also liked working in the yard. You could frequently find him outside his home raking leaves and picking up pecans and branches.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Philip and Emma Reimer; his brother, August (Bud) Reimer; and his sister, Irene Reimer.
Vernon is survived by his wife of 29 years, Dorothy Reimer of Thorndale; step-son, Dorvin Handrick of Thorndale; step-daughter, Devona Butterworth and husband Steve of Thorndale; and granddaughters, Heather Butterworth and Kristen Butterworth of Thorndale.
