Winning streak: Lady Yoe capture back-to-back wins

The 2017 season for the Lady Yoe has been all about constantly learning and improving on play as the season has progressed. This past week, it’s safe to say that was accomplished as Cameron took down Franklin in an exciting five sets from Yoe Gym, 25-20, 17-25, 24-26, 25-15, 15-9.

This victory does not come as surprise as the ladies nearly took the match when it was on Franklin’s home court the first time these two met.

“We were on the better end of the game this time,” said Cameron coach Kamol Nohe. “We were more prepared because we knew how they were going to play. We carried out our game plan and took advantage of their errors. Our kids our playing together as a team and that is important.”

The turning point in the match came in the fourth set when Cameron was down 2-1. In that set, the ladies trailed 7-8 before Darci Denio got to the service line and stayed there until it was a 20-9 advantage for the girls in maroon and grey.

“She was on a serving train and she was in the zone,” Nohe said on Denio. “It was not just the fourth set, it was throughout the sets.”

It was a good feeling for Denio, who’s starting to get back the touch she had earlier in the season.

“I was serving well at the beginning of the year and then I went through a bit of a serving rut, but I have been getting back in the hang of it recently,” said Denio on her 10 aces. “Tonight it just really showed up.”

Franklin had a 7-6 lead in the deciding set before Cameron closed out things on a 9-2 run. It was a satisfying moment for junior frontline player Kenzie Wimmer, which spiked home the kill to end the match.

“I saw the middle was open and it was open all game,” said Wimmer. “My heart just dropped because we needed that win to help us out.”

Cameron also swept Hearne on the road Tuesday to improve to 3-7 in 20-3A play. Cameron will look to keep the momentum up during a tough stretch of games against teams in playoff contention. “Hopefully we can keep the momentum up and keep working as a team,” said Wimmer. “This is a really big confidence booster and we know we can do something in this district,” added Denio following the Franklin win.
