Lady Yoe pick up two wins

As the non-district schedule comes to an end, the Lady Yoe continue to gain momentum. Cameron picked up a pair of wins this past week, downing McGregor on Friday in five sets before taking down Marlin on Tuesday in four. Cameron’s overall record now improves to 9-17 with district 20-3A set to begin. The Lady Yoe will travel to Rogers on Friday for the opener. Varsity begins at 4:30 p.m. Cameron had previously played Rogers to a 15-13 fifth set loss during the tournament season.

Yoemen remain #1 in statewide polls

With Cameron’s impressive 40-14 win over Bellville in week one, no changes were made at the top of the polls. The Yoemen remain as the number one team in the AP poll, receiving 16 of the 24 first place votes and 223 points overall. 2. Brock (4, 196), 3. Gunter (1, 167), 4. Hallettsville (1, 139), 5. Lexington (1, 130), 6. Yoakum (110), 7. Wall (95), 8. Newton (1, 94), 9. East Bernard (54) and 10. Malakoff (50) all remain in the top 10 for week two. Franklin is ranked 15th with 3 votes.

For Texasfootball.com, Cameron is in the top spot ahead of Hallettsville, Brock, Yoakum, Malakoff, Wall, Farmersville, Pottsboro, Goliad and Woodville. Teague and Rockdale both dropped out of the top 10 with losses.

Westbrook finishes strong in preseason

After sitting out last week with an injury, Dede Westbrook returned to the Jaguars lineup for the final preseason game of the year. Westbrook shined once again, hauling in 6 catches for 115 yards and a touchdown in a 13-7 win over Atlanta. Despite missing one game, Westbrook led all receivers in the preseason games with 288 yards. John Oehser of Jaguars.com has listed Westbrook as a second team slot receiver behind the likes of Marqise Lee and Allen Robinson. Jacksonville will travel to Houston on Sunday to open the 2017 season.

Yoe band fundraiser before Gatesville game

The C.H. Yoe High Band will be hosting a fundraiser meal before the the start of the Gatesville football game this Friday. The band boosters will have tables set up outside the stadium for a bbq brisket sandwich meal. The deal, which is $8, includes the brisket sandwich, chips, dessert  

and a drink. Sales will be ongoing from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. or until sold out.

Rough week for college football in Texas

It was not a good week for three major collegiate football programs in Texas. Coach Tom Herman made his debut as the head man in charge of the Texas Longhorns, and it ended with a 51-41 loss to Maryland. The Terrapins were 6-7 in 2016. A bigger upset was brewing as Baylor, also under first-year head coach Matt Rhule, fell to FCS Liberty, 48-45. The Bears were 34.5 point favorites. It was Liberty’s first win over an FBS school since a 25-24 victory over East Michigan in 1989. To cap it all off was Texas A&M’s collapse against UCLA on Sunday night. A&M held a commanding 44-10 lead in the third quarter before totally falling apart down the home stretch. Herman and Rhule will have time to try and rebuild their respective programs. However, Sumlin, which has been with the Aggies since 2012, is under pressure to win games now. Before the season, A&M athletic director Scott Woodard publically stated that Sumlin “knows he has to win games”. There may not be a hotter seat in college football.
