Memorial Ruck and Ride to honor Andrews, Price

Cameron residents are invited to remember and honor the lives of Major Sergeant Charles Price III and Second Lieutenant Darryn Andrews, who were both killed in action in Afghanistan, on Aug. 19.

A Memorial Ruck, Ride, and Service are planned through out the morning and into the afternoon.

The Memorial Ruck will gather at 8 a.m. at the Cameron City Park, across from the Public Library.

“Everyone is invited to attend that is physically capable to hike eight miles in the Texas elements,” organizer Bobbie Wiesman said. “Typically, a rucksack or backpack is worn and maybe weighted or packed with supplies. Supplies suggested for an enjoyable ruck are sun protection, water, and comfortable footwear. A backpack is not a requirement.”

Wiesman said the public is invited to be as patriotic as possible and is encouraged, if not participating in the ruck, to gather along the route to show support for the Price and Andrews families.

The ruck route will begin in the park and head north on Fannin Street, past Yoe High School, and then out Highway 77 North to Denio’s, and then return along the same path.

A Memorial Motorcycle Ride will coincide with the ruck on Highway 77 south of Cameron. If you or your motorcycle club would like to participate, please contact Wiesman at (254) 482-3112.

Following the Ruck and Ride, a memorial service will be held for MSG Price and 2LT Andrews at the City Park at 1 p.m. The service will feature VFW Post 8787 (Austin) honoring the Colors, Wendy Ward singing the National Anthem, Rick Kolberg of Operation Enduring Warrior delivering the eulogies, and Earl Granville, amputee veteran and Oscar Mike ambassador, as keynote speaker.

Those attending are invited to bring their own seating to the park for the Memorial Service. There will be a section of chairs for handicapped and elderly.

Parking will be available in the lot west of the library, the lot across the street from the Isabella Nail Salon, and the city streets.

The City of Cameron Police Department will be on hand at the crossings to assist with safety. The Milam County Sheriff’s Office and Texas Department of Public Safety will also be on hand ensuring the safety of the ruck as they move through the streets and highway.

Cameron Volunteer Fire Department and Air Evac Lifeteam 47 (La Grange) will provide first aid and cooling stations along the route.
