Lady Yoe Volleyball opens 2017 season

The first official regular season sporting event of the 2017-2018 school year got underway on Tuesday from Yoe Gym. The Lady Yoe volleyball team began their season by hosting the Lady Vikings of Lago Vista and the Thrall Tigerettes.

The competition was fierce, as Lago Vista was in the second round of the 3A playoffs last season while Thrall had advanced all the way to the 2A state tournament.

The ladies opened up things with a competitive match versus Lago Vista, falling in four sets: 15-25, 28-26, 25-16, 25-23.

For head coach Kamol Nohe, he is already seeing improvement from a season ago.

“I think this group is a different group of kids,” said the Lady Yoe head coach. “Last year, it was 0-3 and 0-3 early on, but coming in here we won the second set. That was a breakthrough. There are more breakthroughs coming along. The kids are really motivated and we just have to shape them to where they need to go.”

In their second set victory, Cameron managed to jump out to a five-point lead and held on late. Sophomore Carley Tucker had a kill to bring things even at 25-25 and then got the set-winning kill moments later.

Things did not go as well in the second match with Thrall, as Cameron fell in three straight: 25-15, 25-8 and 25-14.

Darci Denio did standout in the opening set, coming in at 4-4 serving with two aces. Marquazia Workman came through with two kills.

Cameron continued to fight in the third set as Tucker had 3 successful service attempts and 1 one kill.

It’s not the start the Lady Yoe would have liked, but Nohe believes if this team continues down its current path, things will work out well.

“It’s commitment to each other and not giving up on the play,” said Nohe on what his team needs to do over the course of the season. “Give your all. If you give yourself a 100 percent, it’s harder for the other team to beat us. That is all I need them to do. Pay attention to each other and support each other. It’s okay to make mistakes.”

The Yoe freshmen picked up wins over both Lago Vista (25-19, 25-12) and Thrall (25-22, 25-22) while the JV split matches with Lago Vista (18-25, 25-17, 26-24) and Thrall (15-25,, 22-25).

Volleyball Tournament Returns to Cameron

After a few years of traveling out of town for tournament play, the Cameron volleyball tournament is back on the schedule. This year’s tourney will feature a total six teams, with three in pool A and three in pool B.

Pool A will feature Cameron, Mumford and Milano while Pool B hosts Rogers, La Vega and Jarrell.

“I think that it will be good,” said Nohe on the tournament. “Slowly, I think we can grow and stay here instead of going out somewhere else. We need the community support. Anytime we have things around here, the community will come out. I need the kids to be motivated by that. The kids love people coming to watch them play.”

Cameron will start their pool games today at 10:00 am (Mumford) and 1:00 pm (Milano). Teams will take a break from action on Friday and return on Saturday for bracket play. The second and third place teams from each pool will play at 10:00 am with the first place squads drawing byes until 1:00 pm. The championship match is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
