Cameron League Baseball Results

There were a total of four baseball teams from Cameron at state tournaments this past week. Everyone participating represented the community well, with each team winning at least two games at their final tournaments of the season.

Starting in the t-ball division, the Astros won their opening game before falling to eventual state champion and host Belton in the second round. The Astros got by another Belton team and Rusk before bowing out to Mineola to finish at 3-2.

Two Cameron teams participated in the eight and under coach pitch division. The Yankees won games over Mildred, Troup and Milford to earn a spot in the semifinals versus Belton. Cameron fell in that game, 4-2. The Yankees defeated Troup and then lost narrowly to the same Belton team (8-6) to finish second in the state.

The Rangers also had a nice showing, winning the opener over Blooming Grove before also losing to Belton. The Rangers had wins over Alto and Milford before falling to Troup.

The 12U Rangers were competing in Brownwood. They won their opener over Brownwood before slipping up against Alto. Cameron then defeated Belton before bowing out to Rusk.

Last week without Yoe Football

This will be the final week without some type of Yoe football action. The start of 2-a-days will begin on Monday and the intrasquad scrimmage is scheduled to take place next Saturday, starting at 8:00 a.m. with the varsity to follow. Cameron will be on the road at Lorena on August 18 and home versus Madisonville on August 24 to close out the scrimmage schedule. The season opener will be September 1 when Bellville comes to Yoe Field.

The Yoe football camp had a total of 66 participants. 28 campers were present for the third through sixth graders, while 38 showed up for the seventh through ninth grade sessions.

Volleyball practice underway

For the Lady Yoe, the season officially got underway on Tuesday with the start of practices. The ladies will have a few days to get work in before bringing in Milano for a scrimmage on Friday, August 4.

The ladies will turn around on Saturday and travel to Harkers Heights for a dual match with the Knights and Salado Eagles. The final scrimmage of the year will be back in Cameron on August 8, with another dual match with Thrall and Lago Vista.

The regular season will open later that week as the Cameron tournament is back on the schedule. Games will take place on Thursday, August 10 and Saturday, August 12. The brackets will be posted in next week’s edition of sports.

Additionally, the Lady Yoe volleyball camp took place this past Wednesday through Friday. A total of 45 campers attended. The camp has hosted by Tony Avillanoza of the Willowbrook Club in Waco.

Yoe golfer wins summer tourney

Yoe High junior golfer Nikolas Keratsopoulos recently won the South Texas Junior PGA Prestige Tour Aggieland Classic at The Campus Course at Texas A&M. Nikolas had a new career low round on the second day, carding a 65, bogey free round. Day one saw Nikolas struggle on the greens, but made up for that with a great approach game to shoot an even par 71 and end in a tie for 5th place, two strokes out of the lead. On day two, Nikolas put it all together hitting 12 of 14 fairways while having only 27 putts to win the tournament over day one leader Brayden Ingebrigtsen of Montgomery by four strokes. Keratsopoulos will finish his summer at the Texas Junior Golf Tour State Match Play Invitational at Traditions Club in Bryan and at the Texas Legends Junior Golf Tour George Hannon Invitational at the Wolfdancer course at Lost Pines in Bastrop. This win was Nikolas' second of the season on the Prestige tour, having won the Spring Fling in April at Wolfdancer. He is currently ranked number 167 among high school golfers in Texas and number 55 in the class of 2019.
