Yoe High Band continues trek through honor band competition

It was recently announced that the Yoe High Band had advanced past the regional and area rounds of competition for honor band and are now at the state level. Honor band is the state’s most prestigious award for concert bands and is the equivalent to a state marching championship. According to the Texas Music Educators Association’s website, there are a total of 13 schools at the state level. Cameron and Sunnyvale, Gunter, Van Alstyne, Mineola, Winnsboro, West Rusk, Canadian, Sonora, Shallowater, Jourdanton, Randolph and Florence are the other schools competing for the top spot in the state. Cameron is the only band from region eight left in the competition as Troy was eliminated after the area round of judging.

In 2013, the Yoe High band finished first in the state in this very competition, ahead of Commerce, Gunter, Winona, New Diana, Kountze and Luling. Cameron could not compete in 2015 as the winner is required to take a year off. The competition is held only every other year.

Five judges will rank the remaining performances, which were submitted earlier this year. Results from the judging will be made available on July 20 from the Texas Bandmasters Association conference.

Cameron Youth Softball Playoffs

The girls Texas Teen-Age softball playoffs began this Monday, and Cameron has a total of seven teams competing over five different age divisions for a chance at the state tournament. The Lil” Ladies will be competing in the six and under t-ball division at Westphalia, the Thunder and Dirt Diamonds are in the eight and under coach pitch league at Westphalia, the Elite and Bullet Proof are in the ten and under group at Troy, the Storm made it to the playoffs in 12 and under at Troy, and the Cru will represent Cameron in the 15 and under division in McGregor.

Much like the girls, the little league boys will have plenty of teams vying for their spot at the state tournament. The boys district tournaments will begin on Monday and a total of 10 Cameron teams will be in the mix. The Astros will be participating in six and under t-ball at Rogers, the Rangers, Yankees and Dodgers will be in the eight and under coach pitch division in Temple, the D-Backs and Giants will travel to Belton in the ten and under tight base division, the Rangers and Blue Jays will stay at home for the 12 and under tight base division, and the Indians and Marlins will be in Harker Heights for 14 and under play.

Rockdale’s Crawford in elite company

Rockdale Tiger star wide receiver Jaquayln Crawford was recently named to the ESPN Top 300. The list, which has the 5’10”, 163 pound speedster at 136, includes players from every position across the country. Yoakum’s Josh Moore (36) and Jordan Moore (127) and Arp’s DeMarvion Overshown (71) are the only 3A athletes ranked ahead of the Rockdale star. Texas had 41 players included, second only to Florida’s 59. Crawford will have plenty of options to weigh before deciding on where to take his talents. Baylor, Houston, Oklahoma, TCU, Texas, Texas Tech and UTSA are just a few of the 17 schools that have made offers to the senior.
