Baseball playoffs: Thorndale moves on; Franklin ousted by Central Heights

This past week, two local baseball teams were faced with difficult matchups in the regional semifinal round of the playoffs.

In 2A, the Thorndale Bulldogs brushed off a game one loss to Refugio (5-1), before bouncing back with wins in game two (4-3) and game three (9-3). In TxHighSchoolBaseball.com’s final regular season poll, Refugio came in at number three while Thorndale was at four.

The Bulldogs (25-4) now advance on to the region IV finals to take on Dallardsville Big Sandy (31-2) with a trip to the state tournament on the line.

In 3A action, the magical run for the Franklin Lions came to an end in a loss to #1 Central Heights. The Lions were no-hit in a 4-0 loss in game onen before falling in nine innings in game two, 3-2. Franklin, the third seed out of 20-3A, ended their season at 21-13.

Academy girls advance to state

For the first time in school history, the Academy Lady Bees will be competing in the state softball tournament in Austin.

Academy, which now sits at 35-8 on the season, swept Grandview in the 3A region III finals this past week, 12-8 and 15-5. Grandview led 6-1 in game one before the Lady Bees took control of the series.

Academy now advances to take on Hughes Springs (34-3) in the state semifinals from Red and Charline McCombs Field on the campus of The University of Texas at Austin. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m on Wednesday. In the other semifinal matchup, Santa Gertrudis Academy (38-2) will meet Brock (33-7).

Multiple Yoemen named to 20-3A all-district list

The 20-3A all-district baseball lists have just been released. The Yoemen, which finished second in the district, were well represented as a total of 10 different players from Cameron were mentioned.

The list was headlined by Jason Llanas, who earned co-district defensive MVP honors. Llanas led the Yoemen with 8 wins, 67 strikeouts, and had a 1.26 earned run average.

First team members include Ty Moore (.380 avg., 27 hits), Caden Harris (3 HR, 26 RBI), Jordan Young (17 R, 15 RBI), Zack Andress (.316 avg., 7 2B) and Bryce Welsh (.310 avg., 24 R). Second team honorees are Alex Alonso (13 RBI), Bryce Brashear (5 2B, 17 R), and Keaton Hundle (.320 avg.). Brandon Wilkins was also named to the honorable mention list.

Moore, Harris, Young, Hundle and Wilkins were all seniors for Cameron.

Yoe basketball to compete in summer tournament

Much like the state 7 on 7 tournament in football, there are similar events for basketball players to compete in during the summer months. The Yoemen will be included in one of those tournaments on June 10-11 from Salado.

Newly hired head basketball coach Nick Burns said that if the Yoemen were to finish in the top two, a spot at the state tournament would be clinched. Burns had been an assistant on the Yoe basketball staff in years past before returning to take over for a retiring Ed Glendening.

Cameron is set to play Lampasas and San Saba during pool play. Cost of admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children. The state basketball tournament is set for June 23-25 in Grapevine.
