Peggy Artie Belle Becker Caffey

Peggy Artie Belle Becker Caffey, 83, a lifelong resident of Thorndale, was welcomed to heaven by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, March 9, 2017. A celebration of life will be held Sunday, March 12, at 2 p.m., at Providence Funeral Home in Taylor with Pastor Walter J. Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Thorndale City Cemetery.
Peggy was born January 11, 1934, to Alfred E. and Minnie (Moerbe) Becker. She became a Child of God through Holy Baptism on Jan. 21, 1934, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Thorndale and received the Rite of Confirmation there in 1946.
Peggy graduated as salutatorian of the Class of 1950 at Thorndale High School. She then attended Durham’s Business College in Austin. On Jan. 9, 1953, Peggy married Hugh Caffey Jr. with whom she enjoyed the next 60 years. Junior preceded her in death in 2013.
In addition to wife and mother, two jobs in which she greatly excelled, Peggy worked as a teacher’s aide at Thorndale ISD during her children’s elementary years and two stints at Alcoa totaling 25 years. Having been born in the midst of the Great Depression, Peggy was always thankful for employment and constantly reminded her children that they should be thankful as well.
Most importantly, Peggy served as spiritual leader of the family and saw to it that her children attended church every Sunday. To Peggy’s delight, both of her children received the Rite of Confirmation at St. John Lutheran Church in Thorndale. Working with the Holy Spirit, Peggy was a major influence in Junior’s decision to join and become an active member of the church.
In addition to Junior, Peggy was preceded in death by her father, mother, and son-in-law, Mike Davenport.
