Omer Franklin Poorman

Omer Franklin Poorman, 92, of Cameron and formerly of Houston, died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2017, in a Temple nursing facility. 

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at the First United Methodist Church in Cameron with Rev. Geoff Lightsey officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron.

Mr. Poorman, retired District Engineer for the Texas Highway Department, was born Feb. 21, 1924, in Katy to Omer Franklin and Dorcas Elfreda (Hoyt) Poorman Aylor.  He was decorated for his service with the U.S. Army in Northern France during World War II. He married Betty Margaret Chachere on Oct. 22, 1948.

Mr. Poorman received his Bachelors of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Houston in 1949. After his retirement with 38 years of service to TXDOT, he moved to Cameron, where he enjoyed a life of raising cattle and growing hay. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, VFW, Texas and Southwest Cattle Raisers Association, American Society of Civil Engineers, Panther Veterans Organization, Life Member of the University of Houston Alumni Association, and the NRA. 

Mr. Poorman is survived by: his wife, Betty Poorman of Cameron; son, Wayne Poorman and wife Vicki of Rosenberg; sisters, Beulah May Vick of Orchard and Kathryn Elizabeth Bowden of Orchard; granddaughter, Gretchen Anne Peluso and husband Peter; and great-grandchildren, Chloe Alexis and Carter Austin Peluso.
