Chamber Honors

Cameron Chamber of Commerce is seeking community input on candidates for several awards presented at the annual banquet. You can submit your ideas for Volunteer of the Year, Organization of the Year, Citizen of the Year, and Business of the Year.  For more information, contact the Chamber of Commerce at (254) 697-4979. The 83rd Annual Chamber Banquet will be held on Monday, Feb. 27, at the Milam County Community Theater.  

 

Pre-K Family Night

Ben Milam Elementary Pre-K classes are having a Pre-K “Let it Snow” Family Night Jan. 26 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the BME cafeteria. There will be something warm for you to drink and something cold for you to play with. For more information, contact mgoodson@cameronisd.com.

 

Cameron Baseball Sign Ups

The Cameron Boys Baseball Association final registration will be held on Jan. 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cameron Volunteer Fire Station. Ages 4 and up. Registration is $70 per child. New players are required to bring a copy of their birth certificate. No registration the day of drafts.

 

Milano Junction Jamboree

The 2017 monthly Milano Junction Country Jamboree, featuring country and gospel music will be held in the Milano Civic Center at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28. Admission is free and everyone is invited. Refreshments consisting of coffee, water, an assortment of sodas, pies, sandwiches and chips will be available.

 

42 Domino Tournament

The annual Westphalia Knights of Columbus Council 42 Domino Tournament is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 29, at the Westphalia Community Parish Hall, Highway 320 in Westphalia. Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m. and last until 12:30 p.m. with play starting shortly after that. Each player will draw for a partner between rounds and will play four 30-minute rounds. Cost is $5 per player. Prized will be awarded to the top players. Food and drinks will be available starting at 11 a.m. Make plans to attend and enjoy an afternoon with old friends and make new ones.

 

Keeping Purple Martins Program

El Camino Real Master Naturalist Chapter of Milam County will present a program on Attracting and Keeping Purple Martins at the Milam County Museum, 112 West 1st Street in Cameron, on Tuesday, Jan. 31, from 1-3 p.m. Speaker will be Donna Lewis.

 

Lunch Bunch

The Lunch Bunch will meet on Thursday, Feb. 2, at noon at the First United Methodist Church Family Life Center in Cameron. Micah Holcombe, County Extension Agent, will give a program on “Heart Health.” The public is invited to attend. Bring a food dish to share for the lunch at noon.

 

St. Paul BBQ Dinner

St. Paul Lutheran Church and School annual BBQ Dinner and fundraising auction will be held Sunday, Feb. 5, at the Thorndale Fireman’s Hall. The meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the auction begins at 12:30 p.m.

 

Milano VFD Fundraiser

The Milano Volunteer Fire Department has begun its annual fundraiser. Tickets are $5 each or five for $20.  Drawing will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at the MVFD’s annual chili supper.  You need not be present to win. All prizes received in Academy gift cards. Prizes are: Henry Golden Boy 22 LR, two Taurus Public Defender .45/410, Henry Golden 22 Cal. LR, Remington 700.270, Marlin 336W 30-30, Remington 870 Shotgun, Ruger American Bolt Action 22LR, Mossberg 817 17 HMR and $100 Academy gift card.  Contact any MVFD member to buy tickets. 

 

MVFD Chili Supper

The annual MVFD chili supper will be held at the fire station on Saturday, Feb 18. There will be a live band, along with live and silent auctions. Serving of food will begin at 4:30 p.m. until sold out - eat in or carry out. Prices are $8 for adults, $4 for age 12 and under and two years and under eat free. Meal costs include drink and dessert.

 

Mardi Gras Bash

The 5th annual Mardi Gras bash will be held Saturday, Feb. 25,  at Simon George Hall, 401 S. Karnes, in Cameron. The event, which will start at 6 p.m., will include a Cajun food dinner, auctions and activities for the kids. Adult tickets are $10 and children under 18 are $5. If you would like to donate items for this year’s event please e-mail cholcombememorial@gmail.com with a description or donations can be dropped off at Ideal Poultry in Cameron. All the funds raised at the Mardi Gras bash support the Chris Holcombe Memorial Scholarship Fund. Since inception $53,000 in scholarships have been awarded to Milam county college students.

 

TACOS AND TECHNOLOGY​

Cameron Junior High and Yoe High School will host Tacos and Technology Feb. 27 from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Cameron Yoe High cafeteria. ​Stroll through our students’ interesting and inspiring technology projects while enjoying a delicious taco. Come and see how technology tools are being used to enhance and expand our students’ worlds.

 

Milam County Aggie Mom’s Golf Tournament

The 5th Annual Milam County Aggie Mom’s Golf Tournament will be held March 4 at the Cameron Country Club. Four-man Scramble. Shot gun start at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Open to all golfers for $60 per player. San Andres Masonic Lodge

The San Andres Masonic Lodge #170 meets every second Thursday of the month at the San Andres Masonic Lodge #170 at 106 W. 6th St. Dinner at 6:30 p.m. followed by a meeting at 7:30 p.m.

 

VFW Canteen

The VFW Canteen is open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 5 p.m. to midnight and Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday Karaoke is held every first, third and fifth Friday. Dart tournament every Wednesday. Dominoes every Saturday from 11 a.m. to ? Pool tournaments on Thursday night. Texas Hold Em Tournament on Saturday night.

 

History of Milam County

The “History of Milam County” by Leila Batte is now on sale at the Milam County Museum. This invaluable volume has been out of print for over 64 years, so we are offering this opportunity to own one of the 500 copies made available by the museum. The volume is $60 at the Museum and $65 if shipped. You can stop by the Museum at 112 West First St. or contact the Museum at (254) 697-8963 or e-mail milamcountymuseum@milamcounty.net. Availability is on first come basis and limited to 500. If you are a collector of history don’t miss the opportunity to own this rare volume.

 

Videos of Judge Black presentation on sale

In 2014 Judge William Black presented a talk about his father “The Life and Times of Sheriff Carl Black” at the Milam County Historical Museum. The museum now has DVD recordings of that presentation available for purchase at the museum located at 112 W. 1st, Cameron.
