William C. Black
William C. Black, age 88, of Temple passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at Baylor Scott and White Memorial Hospital in Temple. He was born on June 28, 1927 in Cameron, the son of Carl and Mary Black.
William was a 1944 graduate of Cameron High School, he served in the United States Navy from 1944-1946, received a Bachelor’s of Business from Baylor University in 1948, Masters of Business from Baylor in 1951, and a Bachelor’s of Law from Baylor in 1954. In 1969 he received an Honorary Juris Doctorate from Baylor.
He currently attended Troy United Methodist Church in Troy and was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Temple where he served as a Vestryman, Senior Warden, Lay reader, and teacher, and was on the Executive Board of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas.
William was a practicing attorney in Milam County and then Bell County, served as County Judge from 1965-1967 then served as counsel to United States Agriculture Committee from 1967-1969 in Washington DC. He returned to Bell County as County Judge from 1969-1971. He subsequently was District Judge of the 146th Judicial District from 1973 to 1988 and served as a retired Senior District Judge.
Throughout his career he also served in the Naval Reserves retiring in 1975 as Naval Commander.
William is survived by his daughters Mary Black Pearson of Temple and Bethany Black and her husband Stuart Coles of New York, New York, formerly of Temple, three grandchildren Sean, Garrett, and Kelly Coles all of Austin, a sister Martha and her husband HD of Kerrville, and his dear companion BJ Finch of Temple.
He was preceded in death by his wife Dorris Floca Black and his parents.
A memorial visitation will be held on Thursday, Sept. 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home 3110 Airport Rd Temple, TX 76504.
A funeral service will take place on Friday, Sept. 18, at 11a.m. at Troy United Methodist Church 2500 FM 935 Troy, TX 76579.
