Lady Yoe golfers grab 2nd in Caldwell

On Monday, the Cameron Lady Yoe golf team competed in their third tournament of the young season on the road at Copperas Hollow Golf Course in Caldwell.

It was another strong performance across the board as the ladies finished second as a team with a 391.  Host Caldwell was first with a 364.  “We did well,” said first-year golf coach Pete Magre.   “We started off slow, but just about all the girls started off slow.  Several of them turned it around and had good back nine’s and saved rounds.”

Cameron’s number one golfer Keagan Galvan was one of those in that position, grinding through the first nine holes before finishing strong on the back nine for a team-low 89. 

“I started off bad, but I came back and it’s all about comebacks,” said Galvan.  “Golf is a game where the next shot is the most important shot.  That is all I did.”

Alexis Magre (96), Jazmin Vaculin (99) and Julia Harwell (107) rounded out Cameron’s score.  Darci Denio (104), Presley Berry (114) and Emily Graham (117) also shot a round of golf for the Lady Yoe.

“I thought Keagan Galvan did a real good job,” said Magre.  “Alexis had a great back nine.  Jazmin Vaculin is coming along.  Right now it is early and we are trying to get better every week.  Darci Denio had a good round for a girl that just started playing.  I’m looking forward to this year and I think our girls have a chance to be very successful.”

The quest for a seventh straight trip to the state tournament will continue over the next few months leading up to district at the beginning of April.  In three remaining tournaments between now and then, Cameron will be looking on improving their all-around game. 

“We need to be more consistent,” said Magre.  “They are capable of hitting a bunch of shots and then you get into a tournament and fatigue sits in.  You have a bad hole and there are no mulligans.  We are looking to mature and have more confidence in our game.”

“We need to get out to the course as much as we can and work hard and keep practicing,” added Galvan.  “I think we really want to get first in district.  It’s a good possibility and we have a good chance.  We just have to put our mind to it and we can do it.”

The Lady Yoe’s next tournament will be at home on February 27.  The boys tournament scheduled for Tuesday in Caldwell has been pushed to Friday due to weather.
